Hi,

I was checking my BIOS settings and suddenly I found something strange...

'Video Memory Cashe Mode' I can chose between 'UC' and 'USWC' modes.
But it says that this feature could kill my videocard if it doens't support
is, so I didn't try it jet.

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS MEANS !

Specs:
-Asus K7V
-Athlon 700Mhz
-Asus V7700 Pure
-128MB 133Mhz SD-RAM
-DirectX 8.0 final
-Detonator 7.17
-Windows ME
-etc

Thanx in advance,

Mr M

Kill it? I thought the worst possible would be that the system can't boot up
anymore.

What? Kill?

Well, if it helps, I have the Deluxe and USWC enabled.

It is to do with how individual 'writes' to the devices (specifically the
video card), are 'grouped' together to improve performance. The full term
is 'speculative write combining' (Phew). Now this won't 'kill' the video
card, but can cause the system to hang when large block I/O is done to the
card (so not during boot, but when doing things like dragging a big window
round the screen). If it gives problems, then resetting the CMOS, solves
the problem. The problem arises because of driver effects with other
devices, and most modern cards have a software 'fix' for this. Cards with
this fix, tend now to enable this feature themselves (overriding the
settings in the BIOS), since it gives improved performance. Simply try
turning it on, and if the machine then gives problems, reset the CMOS.

Best Wishes
