CAN'T WRITE ESCD.
Is this a problem? Does anybody know how to fix it?
This might be a dumb question, but what does ESCD stand for?
That might help me track down the source of the problem.
Hmm, I had the ESCD problem also when I was installing my Amd 5x86-75/133
the first time with the MB, but then after hacking something (and really,
I do not know what I did) - it just disappeared. So far the ESCD error
hasn't shown up anymore although I was curious and tried to get it to
come back.. oh well ;)

ps. my MB is rev 1.2 and 5x86-75/133 works wonders overclocked at 160MHz.
Hai Luostarinen, this is Stephen Wong from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Glad to know that you got the
AMD5x86-75/133 processor working at you PVI486-SP3 rev. 1.2 motherboard working fine. BUT, the luck is not at
my side.
I just bought that CPU and with great excitement I printed out the instruction from Asustek Web Site regarding
the jumper setting for this new CPU of mine. (ASUS Q&A -- 486 M/B (0010)). This is how I configured it;
JP18: 1-2, 4-5 short
JP19: 1-2, 5-6 short
JP20: 1-2 short
JP21: 1-2,3-4,5-6 short
JP22: 1-2 short (for 4x CLK)
JP23: 3-4 short (for Write-Back)
JP24: 1-2, 4-5 short
The above setting seem to give me problems. I can even boot up and all the 3 LED at my keyboard all light up
and the system just hanged there.
For JP23, I did tried short 2-3 for Write-Through and open 1-2 at JP22 for 3x CLK. It all failed. I am using
the same motherboard PVI486-SP3 rev 1.21 with B4 stepping.
Glad if you could assist me on this matter.
Thank you and Best Regards.

He most likely has the newer PnP BIOS (0304 or 0305) which previously had
the BIOS jumper switches set to either 5V or EPROM so the ESCD could
not be written to the Flash EPROM chip. He probably changed it to the 12V
setting. (JP32 and JP33 set to 1&2 I think)
Either that, or the error still comes up but goes by so fast that you do not
notice it. Which is what happens in my case.

You probably have the 0205 BIOS (on bootup it should tell you What version
of the BIOs you have). I have the same motherboard, rev 1.21 with B4
stepping. Its not really worth it to buy a newer PnP BIOS from ASUS as they
charge $25 US from the America Asus people. Dunno about over there in Malaysia
though.
This is what I did to get it working. I used the normal flash program and
forced flashed the BIOS to 0304. Just treat the 0304 version of the BIOS as
normal and use flash to flash it in. On bootup, you will get ESCD errors,
but I can use the AMD chip with no problems running at 160MHz (4x40). However,
I don't have Win95 installed on my system, so I don't know how the ESCD error
will affect Win95's ability to auto-detect peripherals.
BTW: Use the write back mode jumper setting, it's faster and it should
work with it.
