I have the following configuration:
Athlon Thunderbird 1 Ghz
Crucial Memory 512 Mb (2x256Mb)
Leadtek GeForce 2 GTS 64 Mb
IBM 75 GXP 15 Gb ATA-100 Drives (2x)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live Value
3COM 3CR990-TX-97 10/100 Mb Ethernet Card
(http://www.3com.com/products/nics/3cr990.html)
SIIG FireWire Adapter
Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
Microsoft IntelliMouse
I keep experiencing many lockups on the machine... sometimes it's 5 minutes
after I turn the computer on, sometimes I can work for hours before it locks
up. I have tried upgrading my BIOS to version 1004C (haven't tried 1004D),
I've tried the "Large Page Minimum Fix" from AMD and Microsoft, and also I
tried the latest MS fix for the VIA AGP driver
(http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/6/06.asp). I also
tried installing the latest VIA Chipset drivers... Pretty much I've tried
everything that people have suggested to me either personally or on
newsgroups... and it still locks up.
I see that many people are having this problem with similar configurations
(note the similarities... NVidia video chipset, UDMA 100 drives...). I was
wondering if anyone has been able to successfully solve this problem.... If
so, can you help me solve my lock up issue?
Thank you all in advance,
Rob.
I wish ASUS or whoever is responsible for this problem to fix it! I paid
$3000 for my machine back at the end of August and I haven't yet gotten any
good usage out of it... I don't have this kind of money to waste on a
machine that will lock up every time I goto use it.
Rob.

does it hang generally when using win2k or especially when using IE 5.x to
surf the web?
either way, try reverting the performance setting from "optimal" to "normal"
in BIOS on the A7V+geforce machine; this issue is known and this is the only
fix for it using latest bios version 1004D and win2k (there is a modified
bios version for the A7V called 1003e2 available at juggernaut's page
http://members.tripod.de/Juggernaut which allows you to run the system at
AGP4x (optimal; normal reverts AGP to 2x) but using this 1003e2 , you'll
loose the secondary VIA ATA66 controller in win2k
i'd recommend to use the 1004D bios and revert performance setting to
"normal" in BIOS until a new bios version will be released that'll fix this
issue hopefully

I had similar problems with lockups on the A7V, with win2000 and IE5.5. I
reinstalled Win2000 with IE 5.01 and the problems have all but disappeared.
Running bios 1004D at optimal setting. Still can't get 4X AGP but otherwise
it's pretty fast.
Good luck.

Well, I reinstalled my machine with the two drives hooked up to the ATA66
controller and it still locks up... :( It didn't lock up while copying the
large file 4 times from drive to drive at the same time using the ATA66
controller... The lockups are quite strange... the machine sometimes locks
up:
1) scrolling text files in UltraEdit really fast to the bottom of the file
2) browsing the web using IE 5.5
3) while loading up an application (only happened once)
I do not think that it is the hard drive issue with the Promise controller
that others have experienced anymore... Here is a few things that I haven't
tried:
1) reverting back to BIOS 1003
2) changing the PCI latency timing to 64 from 32
3) changing the BIOS from 'optimal' performance to 'normal' performance
4) trying one of Juggernaut's BIOS revisions
5) maybe it's my power supply... maybe the components are sucking too much
power and that's causing an issue... ???
Things I've tried after I redid the machine with the drives on the ATA66
controller:
1) removed 256 mb of RAM (I had 512; so I removed one 256 mb chip)
2) changed the slot of where the RAM chip was physically plugged into
I have contacted:
1) ASUS --> NO RESPONSE
2) Tom's Hardware --> NO RESPONSE
3) Leadtek (my video card manufacturer) --> Responsed... tried everything he
had to say... nothing worked :(
If anyone has any suggestions, please repond to this post or reply back to
me personally,
Thanks for everyone's help thus far,
Rob.
(BTW: I put this in another thread as well... sorry for the duplicate
posting...)
