what is a registered dimm?

I got one, pc100 ecc sdram, but what exactly does registered mean?
Is it some kind of certification or something?

It's a DIMM with a register chip, used in 256MB DIMMs. With registered DIMMs
the BX chipset supports 1GB memory, vs. 512MB for unbuffered SDRAM, but
performance is slower. Registered and unbuffered DIMMs cannot be mixed in a
BX system.
