Why won't the port driver load properly for my secondary IDE on the first
boot of the day??

Once I reboot everything 'mostly' seems to work OK.

On the primary IDE I've got two hard drives (a WD AC23200 and a Seagate
ST51270A) and on the secondary I've got the Creative 2423 and the LS-120.

The driver either doesn't load at all (secondary IDE appears with an
exclamation mark in SYSTEM\DEVICE MANAGER) or loads partially with the
CD-Rom being not accessible i.e. 'there is no disk in drive E insert a disk
and then try again'.

I've updated the bios to v110 and tried the Intel busmaster driver (LS-120
doesn't like IDEATAPI.MPD) and I've used the MS update to give me the
latest ESDI_506.PDR.

I even got a replacement CD from Creative, but the new one behaves the same
as the old one.

Anybody had similar problems??

Thanks

Have you tried moving the LS-120 to the master and the CD to slave? The
LS-120 I have specifically states that the drive may not work properly as
the slave on the secondary controller.

Steve-

I recently got a tx97 board and have had loads of problems with the
IDE channels. The bundled BM drivers on the CD caused my system to
get a Windows Protection Error. What I did was uninstall the BM
drivers and just use the Win 95 osr/2 drivers - I hope this doesn't
decrease my performance at all.

I also noticed that my CDROM was coming up intermittantly, sometimes
it would and sometimes it wouldn't. Apparantly a CD must be set to
master if it is alone on the secondary IDE channel.

In reference to your problem - I would suggest trying every possible
combination of devices, like try putting the CD on pri slave with one
of your seagates and put the zip as sec slave with your other one. Or
vice versa.

It is rather disappointing to have these IDE problems with such a
highly acclaimed board.

Thanks for your reply Nathe

I've tried all the things that you suggest and I'm currently running the
Win95 busmaster drivers and they work fine (don't forget to enable the DMA
box in DEVICE MANAGER/DISK DRIVES/GENERIC IDE).

I get better performance from these native drivers than I did from the
Intel ones!

I agree that it's a bit "off" getting problems like this with a supposed
quality board.

Regards

Steve

P.S. How do you get your e-mail address to appear like that??
I'm new to this newsgroup thing and I'm already getting spam.

I use a TX97E rev 1.12,
On the IDE Primary, 2x 3.2Gb Quantum ST UDMA
On the Secondary IDE, Master, Iomega ZIP 100, Slave: Creative INfra 2400.

The installation for all my devices were a snap.
I have had no problems with any of the devices or the Board for as long as I
have Windows95 OSR 2.

BUT!!! The most important $2 investment I've made was to get quality IDE cables
AND secondly, a GOOD power supply unit.

Take a look at these 2 items before you so easily point a fault to the Asus
Board.
