Hi I'm bulding a somewhat high-end pc and I need some help. The specs
are:
Asus P2B mobo w/ 400 MHz p2
Inwin full tower case, 128 MB Micron Pc 100 sdram
Iomega internal zip drive, Maxtor 2880 8.5 gb DMA hd, and 100x eide cd
I know how to put most of it together, but I am confused by how you
would install windows 98.

Use a boot disk to partition and format your HDD and load CDRom drivers and
go to it.

Do you have the full version windoze 98 or upgrade? With the upgrade, you
need proof of ownership of a lower version of windoze (ie: disks for windoze
95 or windoze 3.1) to do a full installation from scratch. If you don't have
one already, create a boot disk with the dos drivers for the cd rom, fdisk,
and format.com so that you can boot your machine up once it's put together.
Then just type D:\setup (D=what your cd rom drive is) and follow the
instructions. You'll need to insert your proof of lower version of windoze if
you're using the upgrade.

Other than that, it should be a routine installation. I've left a few
steps off -- E-mail me if you have any specific questions such as
partitioning your hd or formating.

Good luck,

Regards,

Dan

Windows98 can be installed simply by inserting the CD-ROM disk into a
bootable CD-ROM drive, and then letting the installation rountine do it's
thing. The same procedure also works for Windows NT 4.0 (which I would
strongly advise that you choose over Win98 unless you're a gaming freak..)

The 100x isn't just a software thing like you think. The are making
some CD-ROM units with multiple lasers, therefore reading more at the
same time, not just spinning faster. I doubt it has a great speed
improvement but its not just software.

I thought only the OEM version of Win98 had a bootable CD. If you have the
Upgrade or the Full version, you will need to boot from a floppy or from the
HD.

The OEM cd is the only one that is bootable.

<snip>
The world of Microsoft Windows as it relates to Windows 98 release
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

OEM-If you are an OEM, it is beyond the scope of these NewsGroups
to conduct a discussion related to this topic

- NOT available to the general public, so should NOT be a
consideration for anyone considering an upgrade
-Comparible to previously released OEM versions

Full-Retail

-Does not run the compliance check for previous OS
-Is NOT a bootable cd-rom
-WILL install and upgrade over a previously installed OS
-Comes packaged with System StartUp diskette

Upgrade-Retail

-WILL run the compliance check for previous OS
-Is NOT a bootable cd-rom
-WILL install as a full version would on a clean system, but the
compliance check must be satisfied by providing previous OS
install media when required.
-Utility to create System StartUp Diskette

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Satisfy Microsoft Compliance Check, you need....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A.) The entire Windows 3.xx floppy diskette set
(Upgrade, Full or System Recovery versions)

B.) The entire Windows 95 floppy diskette set or CD-Rom
(Upgrade, Full or System Recovery versions)

C.) A currently installed Windows 3.xx or Windows 95. *

* If your computer came with a Windows 95 Companion CD ROM that
does not include SETUP.EXE you MIGHT need to upgrade from an installed
Windows 95, either your current installation or an “original installation”
from your systems recovery disk. Check with the vendor who supplied it.

Hope this helps,
