as slockets do provide a way to give the cpu the 1.65V it needs (the board
doesn't have a jumper for that) and higher revisions of the board support
those cpus - what could be the cause for problems?

I have the same board and revision and having been using the 850 since
last December. Guess it must be fooling me into thinking it is
working:)
I used the PowerLeap adapter to eliminate any chances of problems and
upgraded to the 1013 Bios. Other than that I had to make no changes to
the system to get it to boot. My only problem occurred with the Beta 7
version of 1013 with some of my SCSI devices. I still don't know why
they wouldn't work correctly but an earlier version of the Bios (Beta 5)
worked fine for me.

You can get an expensive slocket with voltage regulator (like PowerLeap)
or just get a normal one and set the voltage to 1.8V. This should be
fairly save as well.
I got a MSI slocket and run my new Cel600(1.7V)@900(1.8V). Get's
unstable over 45°C, but I think a while for burn-in and some tweaking
can get this in control.
