But today, I just tried writing to tape for the first time. I need to
offload some of my finished DV footage off my hard drive to make room to
create DVD images from the MPEG-2 stuff I've encoded. I tried doing it (with
two different programs), and the result is four little squares that have more
or less the correct video data in them (some artifacts), and a mostly blank
(grey or high-frequency vertical stripes) picture with no sound. For some
reason, the motherboard's 1394 header is not sending data properly even
though it's receiving it properly. Unfortunately, I've already sold my old
firewire card (after all, I didn't need it, since my new motherboard has
three firewire headers on it!), and I'd rather not buy another one, since I
already paid for one by buying this motherboard.
I've looked through Google's newsgroup search for this topic, and only found
a few hits for some reason. And none of them hinted at a possible solution.
I'm using Win2K with all of the latest patches (SP3, security patches, etc)
and a Sony DCR-PC100 digital camcorder that worked with with the Pinnacle
OHCI firewire card I had in my machine before this motherboard, on an
A7N8X-Deluxe running an Athlon XP 2400+ (currently running 166x12) with 512MB
OCZ PC3500 EL RAM. And I'm using the 1002.001 BIOS, the only one widely
reported to correctly unlock Thoroughbred-B processors.

Have you tried changing 1394 headers? I found that one of my headers does
not work (at all), and the other does.

No. I'll rip my case open tonight and give that a shot.

No luck. Both headers work equally. They receive fine, but do not transmit
properly. I should have a firewire card tomorrow, but adding more hardware
to do what my current hardware is supposed to do isn't really an ideal
option. :)

Has anyone had any correspondence from Asus on this issue?

I'm afraid I don't have another firewire equipped machine to test with. I've
seen others here report this problem, and some say they have no problems with
other firewire devices, while others say they have problems with any outgoing
firewire traffic. <shrug>

I have.. This is my correspondence. You can see why I didn't pursue it past
one exchange.. :)

Firewire works fine for input, but not for output. Im trying to write DV
video to a tape, and multiple programs give me the same results - four small
squares of partial video on a blank background. I don't have other Firewire
devices to test, but I suspect the send speed is very slow, causing this
problem, based on the problems that others have reported in the
alt.comp.periphs.motherboards.asus newsgroup. This problem seems to be very
common, but no one has found a solution. Is this caused by a faulty
motherboard? Are there driver issues with this board? My camcorder (Sony
DCR-PC100) works fine with any other Firewire port, so the problem is
definitely with my motherboard and not my camera. I sold my old Firewire
card under the assumption that your motherboard works as advertised, and now
I need to buy another one.
Can you offer me any kind of solution?
Well I know that data tramsfer works for Firewire HDD's. I have an Apple
iPod which uses some software that essentially turns it into a HDD as far as
WinXP is concerned, and I can upload and download MP3's to it with no
problem. However I have a problem trying to write DV back to my JVC GR-DVM5.
I can pull DV off with no dropped frames at all, but can't write edited DV
back to the camera, so I am using my old Pyro Digital card until ASUS sorts
this out.

Maybe, but I'll ask around work and see if anyone has one. By the way, I was
using Adobe Premier 6.0 when I had the problems. I also have a copy of Ulead
Media Studio Pro 6.0 that came with my Pyro card but I haven't tried that
yet. The only reason I mention it is that I read where someone was able to
write back to their DV camera using a Pinnacle program (or was that you that
was using Pinnacle?).

I've used both Vegas Video (3.0) and Vegas (4.0), and neither write to tape
properly for me. I'm pretty sure that it's a motherboard issue and not a
software issue.
I have spoken to Asus on the phone about this issue. They claim they
have NEVER heard about this problem and that I am the first to report
it. On top of that, they said their computer system was down so they
couldn't open a support issue for me. They told me they'd look into
it and call me back. I doubt I'll ever hear from them again. I'll
probably call back and re-report the problem and try to get a support
issue number from them. I'll post it up here if I do get one.

What software are you running?
==================================================
http://home.insightbb.com/~joefall3/index.htm
A7N8X-Deluxe, BIOS version .C, the nforce2 driver package off the Asus site,
Windows XP, SP1, and Vegas Video 3.0c.
Randy-
I looked at Vegas Video as one of the few full featured editing suites that
could work with .wmv files but routinely use Media Studio Pro. I have a copy
of Adobe Premiere too but I find it less intuitive to use.
