I recently got a KT7A-Raid board and it works fine with my old Seagate
9.1 ata-33 drive. I just bought a Maxtor 30gb 7200rpm ata-100 drive and I
can't install windows. I've tried 98se , me, and 2k. On the first 2, the
installation freezes after the devices have been searched for. Once, I
finally got into ME but there were no devices listed in the device manager.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks

Try forcing the drive to UDMA4. Worked for me. UDMA5 was just too
fast.

I have a KT7A RAID & Maxtor 30Gb ATA-100 hooked up to it without any
problems?
Infact I just downloaded the AMSET utility from Maxtor wich modifies the
acustic levels on the drive & subsequently allows for higher performance
depending on what setting U choose. BTW Maxtor HD's are shiped in "quiet"
mode which also happens to be the slowest mode!
Turning the acoustic levels "off" yealds a near 10% gain in HD seaking
speed.

I have the same setup and the same problem. I've switched out every other
component once - CD, memory, display card and monitor - to no avail. It
seems that there must be some sort of incompatibility with Windows and the
Maxtor 30 gb 7200 ata-100 setup. I've been switching the PIO and the enable
UDMA settings with no luck. Did you ever get yours to work?

Hmmm, no problems here. Although I only have win 2k installed, but it
worked fine as far as the install is concerned.

Which controller are you using to install windows? I have found that I can't
boot Win2k using the high point raid controller (IDE3 - IDE4) with my Maxtor
drive set to UDMA100 (mode5). If I boot off a floppy and run Maxtor's DMA
utility 'UDMAUPDT /dma:4' to set the drives at UDMA66 (mode4) Win2k will
boot with no problems. You might want to pick Maxtor's DMA utility and try
setting your drive to mode4 to see if that helps.

If it doesn't work you can always set it back to mode5.

I tried DMA4: no joy. Thanks anyway. "jcros" was able to get his machine
going by changing the video card. I've tried another video card but it
didn't work for me. However, I noticed that the Windows set up didn't
always freeze up at exactly the same place in the program but it was more
dependent on time (about 10 minutes). I was finally able to progressively
get through the entire setup by shutting the system down and waiting for a
few minutes between restarts.

The CPU fan runs and the temp for my 1G Thunderbird averages 47C. I
decreased the IO voltage a notch and I seem to get another minute or two
before Windows shuts down. I don't think that the CPU heat is my problem.

So it appears that something else in my system is heating up and Windows is
helping me by shutting the system down. My case orients my display card
(and its heat sink) upside down so I'm thinking that I need another fan
blowing across my card to stabilize my system.

I had close to the same problem with a Maxtor 27 GB ATA 66. If you use the
Maxtor formatting disk to set up your HHD, make sure it doesn't install the
maxtor mini bios for large HHDs. After I deleted this maxtor utility the HP
and windows finally recognized the maxtor and all worked well. At least
worth checking. Good luck!
