I'm building a new PC, and having trouble with my Adaptec 19160 card and
Abit KT7A mainboard. The problem is this: when I boot up, I get the Adaptec
BIOS header and SCSISelect message. The card scans the bus, finds and
correctly identifies the drive, but does not assign a drive letter and the
'SCSI BIOS installed sucessfully!' message never appears. The machine
continues to boot from the DVD. I can use SCSISelect utilites to change
options for the drive, and even do a format, so I know the card and adapter
are working together fine. During Windows 2000 setup, I can load the adaptec
drivers and the scsi drive is corrrectly identified. I can create and
destroy partitions on it, but cannot format or install to them, i get a
'unknown disk' error message.
The machine specs are: Abit KT7A mainboard, AMD Thunderbird 1.2Ghz, 512MB
PC133 SDRAM, Matrox Millenium G400 MAX dual-head video, Creative 12X PC-DVD,
Adaptec SCSICard 19160 connected to a Seagate Cheetah 18.4GB Ultra160 scsi
drive (model 318404LW). I pulled all the other cards for troubleshooting, so
only essential components are in the box now (cpu, ram, video, dvd,
scsicard, hd). I've tried everything I can think of, upgraded system BIOS
and scsi card BIOS to latest versions, disabled all power management,
disabled the IDE bus, tried lowering CPU/bus speed, tried with 3 different
video cards (both PCI and AGP), tried the scsi card in every PCI slot, tried
different RAM, etc... nothing seems to work.
I tried the scsi card and drive in another machine with a different Abit
mainboard, and it works fine. The SCSI BIOS loads fine and I can install
Windows2000 to it with no problems. So, I think the problem is between the
KT7A mainboard/scsi adapter card.
Has anyone gotten a 19160 card and KT7A mainboard to work together? Has
anyone else had problems like this, or know something i could try? Some
little BIOS setting I'm missing? Any and all suggestions appreciated, since
I'm up sh*t creek till I get this working. Thanks in advance.
Matt

Maybe that is for the better. Adaptec flash utilities are notoriously bad.
Once going bad there is no way back other then to return it to adaptec
for repair.
Btw, is the flash supposed to be a downgrade or an upgrade in that case?
