Yes, there is a huge difference between a USB Flash drive and a Memory Card
reader.

A USB flash drive only works as a storage media much like an external USB
hard drive.

A Memory card reader can read the various memory cards used in digital
cameras. (Not all of them!)
You do want to get a Memory card reader that can read the type of memory
card your camera uses.

Most digital cameras can use the USB connection to transfer pictures to the
computer, the advantage of a memory card reader, is you don't have to use
the camera's batteries while transferring pictures.

One point, for a newbie, NEVER format the camera's memory card in the card
reader. Only use the camera to format the memory card.

The reason is the computer will not use a camera compatible format.

If you format the memory card in the computer, the camera will not be able
to use the memory card,
until you format in the camera.
