Writing on CDs

Okay, I saw a couple of posts here recommending Sharpie (and various
others) for writing on CDs. My question is, do you just write on the
top? I don't really want to get a labeling system; thought I could just
write the volume name on the CD. Any problem with doing this? Does it
affect use of the CD in any way?
