Not a particularly profound query from a not too computer literate
guy! My grandchildren use "Notepad" frequently, but the default Saveas
folder is in the Windows folder. How can we change it to a more
convenient and safer folder as I do not like poking about looking for
files there. Unfortunately there is no preferences option to make
changes. Someone suggested using Write or Wordpad, but they seem not
to be installed.

Thanks.

Lew.

AFAIK there's no (easy) way to change default save folder for notepad,
but it's possible to create shortcuts to the most often used folders. To
do that one shoud create /expand/ registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ComDlg32\Placesbars
and create here string values Place0, Place1, Place2, Place3, Place4...
Now one can define shortcuts that will be shown in "save as" dialog box:
Place0=C:\My Folder\Files
Place1=C:\Photos
