Why so intransigent?

Why don't you try VLC?

Try codecs.com. If you grab the K-Lite Codec Pack, you'll get pretty much
every codec ever created for any purpose. (I exaggerate, but still...) This
file:

ftp://mail.rax.ru/pub/soft/multimedia/codec/K-Lite_Codec_Pack_880_Mega.exe

...is what I'm using. 21,734 KB; dated 5/17/2012. (That file is what
codecs.com links to, btw; it's not just some random site.)

If you want something else, just browse through that ftp directory. Several
other things available (including smaller, less-inclusive versions of K-
Lite).

It's not for W98, the installer gives the usual 'newer version of Windows'
demand. Any way to crack it open for manual extraction and Regsvr32 install
of specific parts?

Nice small program there, finds installed codecs, made by the same person who
made NirCmd I think. There's a CCCP package there, but same applies, I need
to open packages manually to see separate AX files and try manual install.

The main problem with packs is that while they are aimed at fixing the codec
equivalent of DLL hell, the difference can often be reduced to that between
hell we can control, and hell we cannot. At least separate files give us a
fighting chance. There's a good chance that they run on W98 too, whether the
installer thinks so or not.
