alt.comp.os.linux...
Given the above requirements, I would suggest CentOS or Mint. Most
other distributions have already abandoned GNOME 2.

CentOS is essentially the Free version of RedHat, so it doesn't contain
any bleeding edge software, but the upside is that the software included
in CentOS or RedHat has already been sufficiently tested and is rock
solid stable.

Linux Mint offers a GNOME 2 fork known as MATE, and a GNOME 2-like shell
on top of GNOME 3 called Cinnamon. The advantage of Mint over
CentOS/RedHat is that it has the Debian-derived Synaptic Package
Manager, which most people consider to be the best package manager GUI
available on GNU/Linux these days.

So, seeing that you wish to stick to GNOME 2, it's safe to say that you
don't like GNOME Shell, and don't want KDE right..?

Well, Mint is a major distribution that has a GNOME 2 fork called "Mate"
as one of their default desktop environments... It would probably suit
your needs nicely, but if you want to try it, they have done a
considerable amount of work to make GNOME Shell more GNOME 2-ish with
Cinnamon... You may find it to your liking.
It also uses apt as a package manager, so it is usually a cinch to install
things.

Linux does not work well with old or slow hardware. But learn the hard way, don't take my word for it...

I suggest you stick with a OS that is from the same year as your hardware. If you have a Pentium II, then Windows NT for example. For your Intel Atom, try Windows XP or 7. I would not use Linux since it's not really stable or made for interoperability.
