Given the above requirements, I would suggest CentOS or Mint. Most
other distributions have already abandoned GNOME 2.
CentOS is essentially the Free version of RedHat, so it doesn't contain
any bleeding edge software, but the upside is that the software included
in CentOS or RedHat has already been sufficiently tested and is rock
solid stable.
Linux Mint offers a GNOME 2 fork known as MATE, and a GNOME 2-like shell
on top of GNOME 3 called Cinnamon. The advantage of Mint over
CentOS/RedHat is that it has the Debian-derived Synaptic Package
Manager, which most people consider to be the best package manager GUI
available on GNU/Linux these days.
