Hi all

Pretty much a total newbie to Ubuntu!
Installed version 10.10 on daughter's Vaio laptop. This is the second time
due to a trashed HD.
I notice when I start Ubuntu, there is no drum roll, although I think there
was during installation and final setup.
Is this just a themes thing?
Also, after restart I go to play utube video and there's no sound.
A short period after re-start (or after the laptop going into lock mode due
to inactivity) the sound seems to return OK.
Anyone give me pointers to look for on unreliable sound please?

TIA

Phil

That depends on what you mean by a drum roll. Disclaimer: I don't use
Ubuntu. If it's a graphical thing, then it's probably a theme package.
If it's a sound, see farther down.

Check whether the sliders of your mixer all are up and unmuted. Fire up
"alsamixer" in a console or in a terminal window. Once you've checked
all the sliders are up and unmuted, save the state via...

sudo alsactl store

Hope this helps.

I guess; the 10.10 version will be End of Life (no support) in fewer
than 2 months.
