Hi, I have a Fujitsu notebook, MITAC 5033 Motherboard with internal modem:
HSP K56Flex.

I've just upgraded from Win 98 to Win XP and the new OS doesn't recognise
the modem. I've downloaded a new driver from driverguide.com, but I'm unsure
how to install it. I read somewhere that you first have to create the port
that the modem should be connected to, but I don't know how to do that in
Win XP.

Does anyone have any tips on how to proceed?

Thanks,
Martin

No, you absolutely should not create a port.

It's a winmodem... it's port is virtualized with the driver. Any port you
created would not be used by the modem. To install it you need to look at
the driver you downloaded. If it has a "setup.exe", "install.exe", or
other appropriately named executible, then run that. If it lacks an
executible named to refer to installing it then it's done by INF method,
that when the OS detects new hardware and starts up the wizard, you
browse to the folder containing the driver file. If you'd already
installed the modem and cancelled the wizard then go into Device Manager
and select the unknown device and through it's properties browse to the
files (unless it has the executible as mentioned above, then just run
that).
