I have a Lacie USB external drive which worked perfectly until
yesterday. I booted up today and was asked if I wanted to format it.

When I click on the disc icon, again I'm asked if I want to format it.

The data must still be there, so any ideas on how to reclaim my data
would be much appreciated.

Have you been discnnecting it with the `Safely remove
hardware` icon in the systray ?. (As you always should !).

You have a couple of options to recover the stuff from it.

You can remove the drive from the case, and try it in your
machine as a slave device.
But first d/load and install....
www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

And see if that can get you access to the drive.

I think I have a dead drive. When pcinspector checks my drives I get
the following error message "bad parameter in boot sector: Bytes Per
Sector (0)=0!"

It then opens a window but shows no files.

It has never been disconnected from the computer since it was first
plugged in.

I might mess about taking it out of the case.

Anyway many thanks for the help, much appreciated.

1) Definitely take the drive out of the external enclosure
and connect inside the system.

2) Have spare space available on your system's internal HDD
(or wherever, preferribly a fast(er) drive so it doesn't
take a long time) to copy off the data, _before_ placing
the external drive in the system. The idea is to not run
this questionable drive any more than absolutely necessary
before /between attempts to copy off the data. Some
failures might make the data accessible for a brief period
and it is usually best to try to create the ideal
environment for the first attempt, which would be with the
drive in the system instead of an external enclosure (which
adds at least 3 more failure points from the bus, enclosure
logic circuits, enclosure power supply).

3) If the data is not accessible normally through Windows
Explorer, try the data recovery software previously linked
and tried. If these can't see the data it it probably gone
but you might still run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics
utility on it, which is available from their website if you
don't have it.

I've found a utility on www.runtime.org which has the ability to
recover most of the data on the disk. Unfortunately I now have to
decide if the data is worth the $79 dollars that the utility authors
want for their product.

Thanks again for the help.

I`d be surprised if PCI can`t see/do it.

I really wish it could, but it just doen't see anything on the problem
drive. I've looked at other drives and (unsurprisingly) it sees all
the files. This other prog took nearly five hours to scan the damaged
drive and sees almost all of the files plus some damaged ones.

Fair enough, but first go to...
alt.comp.freeware
and ask for Freeware file recovery software.
Explain that PCI can`t see the files, but your other
program can.

I've had cases where PCI couldn't do it but Ontrack
Easyrecovery could.

I haven`t used EasyRecovery for about 3 years Kony.
But your quite right (as usual <g>.)
Always been extremely lucky with PCI.
Trouble is, circumstances, and the problems, vary slightly.

If the data recovery software is unable to see your data then you
should go for data recovery services only if your data is too
valuable. As data recovery service is an costly affair. For data
recovery services you may contact Stellar Information Systems Ltd.
They are capable of recovering data from any kind of situation, from
logical media crashes, Invalid Drive & disk specification, Accidental
Deletion of Data even from Recycle bin / Sabotage, Data Lost due to a
virus attack, Missing File/Directory Or Accidental re-partitioning to
physical media crashes caused due to malfunction of Read/Write Head
assemblies and PCB/Logic Board failures.
