EDO (Extended Data Out) is an improvement over the previous FPM (Fast Page
Mode) memory. Most computers (chip sets) allow for the use of either type.
Check your manual for any specific limitations.

Do a price watch search.

When you first boot the computer, there is a BIOS string that
is reported on the screen. If you can write the string down &
post it to this NG, it can be decoded to tell you the mother-
board brand.

As for buying new EDO memory (it might be expensive and it has
nothing to do with the recent SDRAM prices, rather because it
is older technology & not so widely available). Often times a
good deal can be had by checking some local online auction
houses (http://www.haggle.com). If you plan on running Win95,
the B version (OSR2.x) is good & requires 16MB minimum, while
Win98 will require a minimum of 24MB (32MB is better).

If you can't find the BIOS string on the screen, you can look
at the systems chipset numbers and report back what you find.
The chipset along with the number of SIMM sockets control on
the mainboard control what types of memory and how much can be
installed.

You might want to think about downloading the manual for your MB... Anyway
most every shop will still have EDO SIMMs lying around..
