I would like to build my own laptop/notebook, and am looking for URLs for
companies that either sell cases, processors, drives etc, or else the
name(s) of some companies that will sell individual parts. Has anyone had
any experience with building their own laptop? If so, I'd love to hear from
you with help/advice. I've built desktops before, so I know most of what is
involved (though obviously it would be substantially different for a
laptop), but finding info on how to build laptops seems to be kinda scarce.
I'd also like to find URLs that discuss how this is done. Anything at all
will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Shannon

Notebook computers are not do-it-yourself jobs like desktops
are...people don't build their own...they have to buy one just like
everyone else.

Even upgrading a notebook is extremely limited (what you get up front
is pretty much it for the life of the notebook) since you need to get
parts from the maker to fit the case--so notebooks can be considered
proprietary--unlike generic/industry-standard desktops/tower computers.
And, the upgrades parts you can get from the maker are minimal...hardly
much to choose from IF they even offer any upgrade components in the
first place. I have been putting my own computer systems together since
early 1996 but realize that if I want a notebook, I have to buy one
like everyone else.

In short, a notebook is a different ballgame entirely so the rules are
completely different: you really can't make your own. There are no
generic/industry-standard parts available for notebook buliders.

When is the last time you saw someone with a "homebuilt" notebook? I'm
sure never, that's because they don't exist. Yes, it's possible to put
something together if you make your own case and go from there, but I'm
talking about notebook parts as available and in the variety as we see
for the desktop scene...there aren't any.

Actually, I'm thinking of the sort of thing that can be put together online
at eportables.com, and their parts (according to the response that I got
from them today) are pretty much off-the-shelf. Their HDDs, RAM and
Processors are all standard items and can all be bought elsewhere and put
into these systems, so I am assuming that *someone* is providing them with
cases, boards etc. I know full well that this is much more complicated
process than building a desktop, and that parts are not as readily
available, but I also suspect that the parts *are* available... somewhere.

I can find everything to build a notebook online, except for cases, and
motherboards. There are literally hundreds of different brands of
notebooks, that obviously means that there are virtually limitless
components to build with. They are getting their parts from somewhere, and
in my estimation the only reason these parts are not more commercially
available is simply a matter of profit control. So if all of the component
providers want to make even more money by selling these same parts to the
rest of us, were here waiting. In the mean time if someone can be of any
help please share your information.
