You have not setup your email properly. Depending what you are using either
imap or pop mail you need to set the server and port. You need to find
these info out from your ISP.

The two different ISPs that I tried are both pop and I have set up mail that
way.
I have mail set at the default outgoing port 25 which both ISPs tell me is
correct,
but the error message does indicate that the mail is trying to go out port
0. What
could cause that?? thanks

I installed Outlook and it works, but OE still won't work. Too strange. I
am ready to give up and use Outlook which I don't like.

Hi, Thomas. If it were me, I'd swallow my pride and call my ISP & ask
them to "walk" me through the setup--one small incorrect configuration, and
it just won't work. I've set up a bunch of OE emails, and until just
recently, I've had to revert to calling. Man! I used to hate to have to do
that. Then, I began copying-and-pasting each 'set-up' page in both 'mail'
and 'news' accounts BEFORE I rebuilt/upgraded the machines. From there it
was monkey-see-monkey-do. But before then........ HTH, sdlomi

Thanks sdlomi and I appreciate the suggestion. And normally, I would agree
with you. But I have done so many setups of OE servers and others that I
can
do it in my sleep. I'm serious. And trust me, that came only after many,
many
calls to ISP service people. But I can tell you that they will blame this
one on
windows - which is true. The config is correct (which means that outgoing
port
is set on 25, but the error message says port 0.)

I know that sounds like a smart-ass know-it-all. I'm so sorry but I have
checked
the config over and over. I am hoping someone else has had this weirdness
happen
to them. Thanks again. I appreciate that you would take the time to help.

Thanks, good guess of course, but I had already shut down zone alarm
thinking the
same thing. I also got desperate and closed down virus and trojan stuff,
but no luck
with all of it shut down.

is your sent mail set to SSL? You may need to authenticate before sending.
You need to specify username and password and try telling it to remember.
