pc power crash on OS installation and games

morning all.

Just built a pc with all new gear except using old floppy and old case.
Terrible trouble installing OS, either XP or 98 as machine switched
self off during installation at variable places of the process. I
persisted ( foolishly?); replugging, reconnecting, blowing on plugs,etc
etc. I even bought a new case, thinking perhaps it was my powerswitch on
my old case that was faulty. Things seemed sorted and I finally
installed XPPro. Finally now I have WinXP Pro running OK I think,
except that when I log into online game Everquest, the same problem
happens, the machine just powers off. Needs about a minute before boot
is possible.

AMD 64 3000 with provided cooler and fan
2 x 500mb DIMM 400 twinmos branded
asus A8N-SLI 64bit
sparkle GeForce 6600GT PCI Express 128mb
550w powersupply atx colorsit big fan
DVD writer
CD writer
160gb Maxtor sata
IIyama visionmaster pro 454 19" CRT

I checked temp of MB and of CPU with asus probe, and thats OK, as well
as MB voltages etc. Fans working OK.

I have tried plugging extra power for the PCI-E card to the MB, and that
makes no difference. MB manual says that extra power supply is only
when using two graphics cards anyway.

As my current craze is trying to continue playing Everquest2... I am
getting pretty frustrated.

I would be grateful for any suggestions at all !!

Out of date sound drivers can cause that even though it seems video
card related.

Go To Start menu- Run- enter DXDIAG and press enter. Run all the
trouble shooting tests.

There should be one or two main Everquest2 forums, where they will
have a few fixes to try.

could a poor powersupplyu explain the installation switch offs, and the
current poweroffs?

yes, big watts and a cheap price are a recipe for disaster. get an antec or
something along that line.

You're welcome.

I think you will find it is the best bang for the buck - remember you
usually get what you pay for! Look at the Antec true power 480w - it should
give you some breathing room.

Aftere taking my PUnit to ths shop, they tested and found it fine.
I found a helpful mate, who tested my machine and YES it wa the power unit.
