My uncle has an HP Pavillion 8570C with built in video. He has bought a new
AGP video card and is having difficulty with the install.

Does anyone have experience installing a video card into the HP Pavillion ?

I've told him to make sure that the bios on-board video is disabled, however
when he plugs in the new card, neither the original port, nor the new card
seem to work....blank screen. He didn't mention POST beeps. Is there a
jumper that needs attention ? I expected to plug the new card in and go,
but it seems more difficult.

What might he we missing here ?

Any suggestions are appreciated !

I don't believe that you will be able to install an AGP card in a computer
that has built in video. The BIOS may permit you to install a PCI video card
!.

I had a Pavilion 8390 with Rage Pro video built in. It had an
Asus motherboard. There was NO AGP socket, just solder bumps
where a socket would normally be. So, it was physically impossible
to install an AGP card.

I have also seen (on a Compaq Presario) where the on-board video is
disabled in the bios, using a PCI video card instead.

There is an AGP slot, correct? If there is, then you have to help him find
the place in the bios where you disable the onboard video.

There will be no AGP slot if there is on board PCI/AGP graphics as on board
graphics is used as a way to reduce production costs. Adding an AGP slot is
therefore counter productive. If he has an AGP card he will have to get PCI
instead.

I have yet to get my hands on his computer, but a snip of the specs from the
HP site list...

Microprocessor Intel® Pentium® III
processor 450MHz
Microprocessor upgradable Yes
Frontside bus 100MHz
Hard drive 19GB Ultra DMA*
Memory 96MB SDRAM
Primary cache (L1) 32K
Second-level cache (L2) 512K
Multimedia drive 32x max. speed
CD-ROM
Diskette drive 3.5" (1.44MB)
Data/fax modem ITU V.90 K56flex
modem, data/fax only (33.6Kbps
send/download up to
56Kbps/14.4Kbps fax)
Video graphics ATI RagePro Turbo
with AGP slot for future upgrades

The last line says its got an AGP slot......which backs up what he said to
me. That being the case, would the install "normally" involve changing BIOS
to disable on-board video, install card, thats it ?
Thats what he says he's tried already to no avail.

I've got plans to get my hands on the computer tomorrow, and would like to
be "educated" a bit.

Any more suggestions ?

Thanks to all who replied.

For those who care to know:

The HP Pavillion 8570C has an ASUS P2B-VE motherboard with on-board AGP
RagePro accelerator...

***AND***

it has an empty AGP slot !!

One quick peek at the board led me to a jumper to disable on-board video
card.

Plugged in new card and the rest is history......piece of cake
(so-to-speak).

Gosh darn, you a heaven sent, your group of posts covered exactlly what I
was about to ask, same comp and all.Couple of questions, A) is jumper
easy to find B)is the process easy, per say driver set up.
And to any of you who might be following this,I'm trying to make a
choice between "Creative Labs" 3d Blaster Annihilator or "ATI" Rage Fury
Maxx 64mb,thr difference being the Rage Fury is in stock and the 3D
Blaster is not in stock.Should I wait for the 3D Blaster ?

A) Jumper was labelled VGAEN...simply set it to off (ie. pins 2-3). It was
located near the end of the video card, close to the IDE ports.
B) After installing the new card, when boot-up (Win98SE) it asked for the
win98 CD to install the proper video driver, then I went through the install
of the video card drivers from ATI. Simple.

This is a motherboard manual in .pdf format. Its the P2B-VM, which is
slighly different than the P2B-VE which my uncle's HP has in it, but is
jumper descriptions helped.

Food for thought...both ATI & Creative are having probs getting stable
drivers out the door, some times never. It's a shame cause they do have
great hardware, but what good is that W/O stability due to driver issue? I'm
now an EX-ATI'er happy with G400 MAX D/H
