Wont' read CD drives

I am using XP with a CD drive and a DVD drive.
Neither drive will read the data. The doors open and they are listed
in my computer, but the directory is blank.

Suggestions please?

they are seen in drive manager (my computer)?

If they are not showing up, there is a fix involving registry edit and ...I cant recall
but something about 'filters'..I have to look it up again.
