Damn! That was where the f---ing virus came from on my other computer!!!! I had turned off the Norton2K on it, but as soon as I clicked on your message here it went apeshit! KAK baby! Clean it off, its a nasty email virus!

Ahhh! This explains your fixation with the afterlife <g>

Well, looks like the younger crowd like to use "nicknames," and the older folks generally don't.  Seems we long of tooth folks are in the minority.  Does this tell us something, Jeff?  (How's the gas, by the way?)

commodore Vic 20. I had one of them.  It took me an entire Saturday to copy one of the scripts out of the book that came with it and all it did was flash different colors on the screen. turned me right of programming. :)

This may be off topic, but sure is entertaining thread!
47 here
first computer I remember screwing up by trying unauthorized commands was an
IBM 1103 in about 1971.
the operators were so amazed by me redirecting all output to the console,
they reloaded the system from cards (a LOT of cards) and ran my deck again
to see what I'd done..... after that I had to use another name to send a
deck in.

Then later, helped hack HASP to take over a 360-65 without the operators
knowing - until some showoff triggered the self destruct and they ran a core
dump to trace that. Lucky there weren't any actual charges installed! If you
know what that meant you ARE a codger :)

I didn't realize I was running over spec @32. I think I must have been
palmed off with a relabelled box. I had real problems with overheating -
especially in summer. I found I needed fluid cooling to keep the heat
dissipation under control and found beer to be the best coolant. There were
problems asscociated with this

1. Increased case size - my 'case' just kindof swelled in the middle
2. Frequent memory related crashes - my 'ram' just randamly emptied or just
failed to function. A cold reboot the next day would often solve this.
3. HD malfunctions - even the longer term storage got flakey.
4. PSU problems - my 'PSU' unit was definatley malfunctioning with
'troughs' but no 'spikes'. This would usually level out by 6 hours up
time...

me..Im 42@feeling younger.com

Ive worked for 25yrs at the same place......home of the first ever
computer(to store data that is)...at Manchester University...(Manchester
Computing where the first computer..valves an all... was reconstructed again
in 98/99 with some of the original guys who worked on it..(slightly grey but
non the less enthusiastic) The Computer has now been re-located as an
exhibit in the Muse of Sci and Indus...in Manchester uk...(its on the web..
I used to work on the old..very old computers..which were the size of a
large garage...but had a massive 512k memory(scary eh)...... most of the
data storage was on mag tape..
and even paper punch cards...of which i used to input via readers..tape and
card..also we used to input on things we called MOP terminals..(multi
online programing..where one line instuctions were put in real
time...hoho...how many paper rolls we used....)
ICL and CDC were some of the big mainframe suppliers..
pc's brought the down fall of centralised computing...
(and probably did me a favour my moving me sideways from operations to
Network installation.....anyway...just a bit of history..
Geoff..
