I'm currently building my first computer, and was trying to troubleshoot
a problem the other night with my ATI 128 Pro 32Mg video card. In doing
so, I tried to install a monitor driver for my Dell Ultrascan P991 (Flat
Screen). I downloaded something off the Dell Web site and installed the
driver labeled P991, thinking that was the appropriate driver.

Now the best resolution I get is 256 colors at 1024x768. Obviously this
is the wrong driver for this monitor. I got better resolution with the
"plug and play" that windows had originally installed (True Color
(24bit). Every time I try removing the driver, windows installs the Dell
P991 driver. I even FORMATTED my hard drive, and it still installs the
Dell P991 monitor. (prior to my attempt to install a monitor driver it
would always install a "plug and play driver" for the monitor)

What do I do? How do I get rid of that association? (I contacted dell,
all they did was send me updated drivers and my monitor wasn't even
listed. I even tried the newer version of the P991 driver. The
resolution options didn't change)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

After a format, the only way the driver would be there for the Dell is if
you reinstalled the driver, or Windows already has one for the monitor.
Actually, the monitor can be a limiting factor on resolution, but the video
card driver limits colors and resolution.
I think you are looking at the wrong device.

Remove your monitor and video card from the Device Manager. Monitor will
be under Monitors and the Video Card will be under Display Adapters.
Install basic drivers for VGA settings. Next time you boot up install
video card original drivers. The PC will recognize your monitor as a Plug
N'Play hardware and install basic VGA driver.
