I second that.
Openoffice 1.1 does an excellent job.
Best freeware one I've seen and been using for years, most people still
think this was only at v.95 or .99beta but its up to v2 now if you know
their new homepage.

Note though, that the correct name of the program is "CutePDF Printer"
so as not to be confused with the $ware also listed at the site. The
program allows you to "create PDF documents from ANY Windows
application (must be able to print)."
It doesn't allow you to open existing .pdf files and alter their
settings. Don't know of any freeware program that does.

You can try MakePDF from <http://www.lexacorp.com.pg/software.html>.
Requires Ghostscript <http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/> and works as a
printer driver, but can also be run from commandline (according to
site).
Check also MailPDF, FTP-PDF and SearchPDF while your there,
as well as the other free utilities offered. (Some of the e-mail
utilities by lexacorp are for Pegasus only - others are general ones -
like the very handy "Listserv Log file splitter" (logsplit) for
example.)

Just downloaded and installed CutePDF Printer and am quite impressed
with it. Very easy to install (unlike the others that require separate
downloading and installing of Ghostprinter files.) CutePDF Printer was
able to make an exact .pdf file, including images and formating, from
a two column 26 page document I compiled five years ago in a
commercial word processing program (16 bit) that I use.

Have used it for awhile and I don't even pay attention to other
suggestions...imo, it's pricelessware.

What about hyperlinks (internal & external) and bookmarks/TOCs? Does
CutePDF retain these?

Q: I was listening to a CD in Grip and it sounded horrible! What's up?
A: Perhaps you are listening to country music...
(From the Grip "First Asked Questions")
Try PDF995 at www.pdf995.com. It has been mentioned before on this
newsgroup but I am not sure whether it is adware. Anyone care to comment?
Rob
I don't think so. See
http://www.acrosoftware.com/Products/CutePDF/default.asp
Rob
It shows a pop-up browser window every time you print off a PDF, though I've
only seen it advertising the payware version of itself. Adware or nagware?
Either way, CutePDF Printer does the same without the browser pop-up.

Thanks, Rob. So much for CutePDF making "an exact .pdf" - its feature
set is no better than any other free PDF makers, and siginifcantly less
comprehensive than PDF995, which also doesn't offer what I need, alas.

While I agree that PDF995 is not strict freeware, by acf definition, it
is simply not correct to say that CUTEPDF does the same as PDF995. A
comparison of the feature set will show that PDF995 offers much more,
especially if used with its sister app.s, also nagware.

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

Well, I tried CutePDF as well and was not impressed at all:
Compared to the same page, converted via Ghostcricpt, the quality was
horrible - lines were blurred or thinned, small writ became unreadable
and similar things. Despite the lower quality, the CutePDF page was
three times bigger than the Ghostscript variant.
I think about using pdftex for creating PDF files, that is capable of
including working links etc - but it only works with (La)TeX files and
that is not nearly as easy to use as any word processor. (At least I am
still not familiar with it)

Yep, beyond the shadow of any doubt! It works perfectly!

Sorry I missed that. However, that was because in my case I never put
links in documents. Still, it meets my limited needs.
CutePDF. No fuss, easy to install and use. 'nuff said.
