Import / read .pst files

Situation:

I use MS Outlook at work and have a few .pst's with good info on them
that I would like to read/import in something other than Outlook (since
I am going to as much freeware as possible at home (minus the OS).
While Outlook may be fine at work, I do not want to run it at home (If
Palm Desktop just had an e-mail client (and would import .pst's), I
would use that!

I have been searching for sometime but I cannot find anything that will
read or import .pst files unless Outlook is installed. Bummer!

Any ideas?

Outlook can export information in a number of formats - have you
experimented with exporting emails into something of a non-proprietary
format and then importing that into another client? Not sure what client
you want to use, but it might have a corresponding import capability... just
a thought...

I appreciate the suggestions, but I am looking for something a bit
different. I understand that Outlook can export...but what about the
PST files that already exist? I have those from other jobs and it do
not want to go to all the trouble of putting them on a flash drive,
taking them to work (where we use Outlook and this may be unethical)
mount them then export them and put them back on my flash drive and
bring them home to import into whatever I want to read them in...see my
point?

I was hoping some genius in the freeware arena had figured out how to
read the proprietary format and make simple tool for it.

Yeah, I see what you mean... much too much hassle. Good luck. By the way,
watch out for this "gotcha": I saved a bunch of .pst files on CDR and
nearly went nuts when I went to open them with Outlook (reading them off the
CDR). Because they were marked "read only" on the CDR, Outlook would not
open them. Worse than that was the fact that the 'error message' was less
than helpful. If I copy them to hard disk and make sure the read only flag
is off there was no problem.
