I have looked all over without finding anything free. (As I recall,
there were some shareware programs -- but that's OT here. Do a search on
shareware - garden - design and you'll find them.)
I finally downloaded CadStd Lite. I haven't tried it yet, and it isn't
really set up for landscaping, but it looks like I'll at least be able to
enter dimensions and draw the trees and shrubs in place. No animation
though.

This is the only gardening freeware that I'm aware of. If you're looking
for landscape architecture to model the landscaping around your home, I've
seen this stuff for low-cost at Staples, I think.
