Steve Gibson bought 12 cheapo 1-2TB pendrives from Amazon. They were
ALL FAKE.

Amazon still sells some of them ... LOL.

Check if your pendrive is "real" before the warranty expires.

Tiny 98KB download. 100% portable. Freeware. Runs on XP or worse.

Hint: Start the program and only then plug in your pendrive.

Thanks.

Validrive just authenticated a 1TB pen drive that I had been given as a
present, but I could only muster about 500GB of data to check out it's
capacity & even that took over a day to write.
I still wouldn't trust the drive for anything important though.

ValiDrive does not check the whole disk. It just tests 1152
random read and writes. If you use something like h2testw it will take
days and possibly melt the drive.
Run ValiDrive a few more times. If the drive is fake, it'll
flag it, and each test only takes a few minutes.
Curious ... what make is it? Sandisk makes a 1TB pendrive, but
it's very expensive. No trustworthy manufacturers make 2TB pendrives,
as far as I know.

Hi Pooh. Been 15 months. Thought maybe you were recycling your
lives.
The firmware on the #FAKE USB pendrives easily tricks M$'s
"disk management" which reports the drives as 1 or 2 TB.
90% of the comments on AmaKon are positive. Until the
customers write more than 64 GB (the real size of the drives), but by
then the warranty has expired. I'm not sure if Amakon allows people to
complain after the expiry.
People in the GRC groups are commenting on Amakon about
ValiDrive when they purchase a #FAKE. Just maybe it'll expose Amakon's
scam. Maybe not. You never see the comments unless you scroll all the
way down.
Linux is not fooled by the firmware. But few people use a real
OS these days.

PS Iffy firmware can automatically install all kinds of
malware. If the sellers are willing to sell fake drives, why not add a
little ransomware? Shit might be interested in the scheme. Or maybe
not. Even he doesn't stoop as low as Jeff. B.

I've tested and test all new USB sticks/SD cards with h2testw and while
it's true that it ain't the fastest (though that probably has more to do
with the slow write speed of (many cheap) sticks) I've yet to see
h2testw melt one.

Thanks.
My first test was with H2testw which ran for a number of days, I don't
remember how many. I don't recall why I stopped the test but it was
probably because of its slowness.
