Unlocker 1.9.0 is spyware IMO

I just installed Unlocker 1.9.0:

on my HP which is running Vista SP2 and during the installation, I was
asked if I wanted to install the Bing Toolbar. When I deselected it, I
was not allowed to proceed with the installation of Unlocker. That is,
until I notice that the "Next" button was counting down from 10. After
those 10 seconds (or whatever it was, I don't remember exactly) the Next
button was re-enabled and the installation was allowed to proceed. I was
using ZSoft to monitor the installation, so imagine my surprise when
after it was all done, I noticed that not only had the Bing Toolbar been
installed despite my deselecting it, but the Unlocker setup file had
also installed the Windows Live Login Wizard. I was able to uninstall
both of those bundled pieces of MS garbage, but I'm pretty POed at this
point.
I've spent the last two days trying to set up this "new" (to me)
computer, and to have Cedrick Collumb flood it with unwanted files and
registry entries infuriates me.
If you have to install Unlocker, I recommend trying to find an older
version of it or an alternative program. In the mean time, I've
contacted Snapfiles and warned them about the problem.

I think the boy probably knows just about how popular his actions will
be. My posting his throwaway in this public newsgroup is just a way to
get even with him for what he's doing. If you don't like my doing this,

I updated, had the countdown, deselected it, and Bing was not installed
nor was Windows Live Login Wizard. Nine files were overwritten in the
Unlocker folder.

If you deselect the Bing install option, the Next button gets disabled
for 30 seconds as a nag trying to get you to reconsider. Even under
Windows XP the user's choice to NOT include Bing is not being honored.
The author of Unlocker fucked up his latest installer and isn't checking
the state of this selector object in the installer script. It wasn't
like this before. I have version 1.9.0 but apparently the author has
changed the installer since I last downloaded his file.
Also, after deselecting Bing and continuing with the install, make sure
to also deselect installing the eBay shortcuts on your desktop. Both
Bing and eBay are proliferated with this software. The author is
desparately looking for money to fund his web site but then there are
plenty of free webhost sites, including your own ISP, where you could
host his site for free. Donationware isn't bad but adware is bad - and
Unlocker has become adware because both Bing and eBay are *enabled* by
default in the install. It used to be "soft" adware in that the user
could disable the foistware installations but now it is hard adware in
that the options to not include the foistware is ignored.
While I currently have Unlocker 1.9.0 installed and use it occasionally,
I checked at Softpedia and they do list this software as adware (they
soften the blighted image by saying "ad-supported"). It should properly
be listed as adware because of its install-time defaults, and now even
more so reported as adware since the crap is forced on users.
On the FAQ and Changes pages, I found ccol...@yahoo.com for an e-mail
address. If you click on the Donate button, you find his e-mail address
is c_co...@hotmail.com. Even if he fixes his installer to honor the
deselections of foistware, that they are enabled by default still
qualifies this software as adware. This software is handy but it is
going downhill fast. Guess it's time to see if I can find a freeware
(and non-adware) replacement.
Besides reporting the change (problem) to SnapFiles, you might want to
see if you can submit a user review so other users know of the foistware
that now gets pushed onto your host. It should be listed as adware. It
should also be noted that now the installer forces the foistware onto
your host (but is probably a bug the author made in a recent change to
his installer).

Well, I updated it yesterday or the day before and the opt out(s) worked
fine for me. Of course, I do not like the timer, and have replaced
Unlocker with EMCO Unlock IT on my website and my computer.

happen differently. I was very careful to make sure the option was
deselected, wait for the countdown to finish and the proceed.

One, Corliss tested in Vista and says he got the foistware despite
deselecting it during the install. I then tested the install under
Windows XP (a virtual machine) and also got the Bing and eBay shortcuts
installed despite having that foistware deselected during the install.
So it has been shown by 2 users on different versions of Windows on
different hosts that the install-time options to not install the
foistware were not honored. Neither of us did any extensive repeat
testing to see how often this behavior is exhibited.
Two, the software remains categorized as adware even if behavior were
correct in honoring the user's foistware selections during the
installation because the installer defaults to installing the foistware.
That is, the defaults are "on" to install the foistware, not "off". He
can offer it but it must be DISABLED by default in the installer program
if the author wants to avoid the adware categorization. Even Softpedia
properly labels his software as adware (they say "ad-supported").
Three, I retested using both the prior copy that I downloaded for the
32-bit installer and the copy that I downloaded today. They are the
same size in bytes (but I don't have a CRC value to compare old with new
to ensure no bytes changed in *value* since, for example, a zero-valued
and one-valued byte are still just one byte in size). What I find is
that sometimes the deselections are not honored and sometimes they are.
This is under the exact same version and setup of the OS. I tested in a
virtual machine so it always starts up with a fresh copy of Windows XP
Pro SP-3 with recent updates (save the last 2 sets). This is about as
clean as the author could ever expect for any instance of Windows XP.
I'm not particularly interested in re-doing the installation and
deselecting the foistware for, say, a hundred times to see how often the
installer screws up (since I may go looking for a less pushy product
regarding the foistware and preferably one that isn't adware because it
defaults "off" the install of the foistware - especially considering
Unlocker is donationware already).
Perhaps the author is getting overly fancy (and is definitely getting
far too forceful regarding the foistware) in making the Next button
disabled for 30 seconds when the user deselects the Bing toolbar (to not
include it in the installation). He is changing the transition of the
state of 3 objects at the same time: the deselection of the checkbox for
the Bing toolbar, the dialog window gets repainted, and the disablement
of the Next button (with a 30-second countdown timer that modifies the
label of the button object and thereafter transitions the button's
enable attribute from off to on). He shouldn't be transistioning the
state of the Next button at all or repainting the dialog window. It
makes him far too pushy in trying to foist the Bing toolbar on users.
He already has a means of donating for his product (and alone that would
make his product as donationware) but he is also hard pushing the Bing
toolbar to acquire more, ahem, "donations" (but degrading his product
from donationware into adware).
Four, I think it's about time the Unlocker author read Microsoft's help
for IE7/8's phishing filter to get his web site off Microsoft's block
list. It has been many upon many months that the Unlocker site has been
in Microsoft's phishing list (renamed and extended as SmartScreen in
IE8). When you visit the site and with the phishing filter enabled in
IE7/8, the user is presented with a warning screen that it is a known
bad site. By using the Tools -> SmartScreen filter -> Report as unsafe
menu, the author can request that his site get reclassified.
Summary:
That his installer is flaky in not honoring the user's choices to NOT
install the foistware which results in installing it anyway, the author
needs to fix the problem NOW, not until he figures out why his installer
is screwing up. The the author has recognized this has happened to some
users evidences that his installer is screwed up. He needs to first get
rid of the disabling the Next button for 30 seconds when the Bing
toolbar is deselected. Maybe that'll fix the problem. It that doesn't
help then default the foistware installs to off (i.e., uncheck them in
the installer UI). And if that doesn't work, get rid of his *new*
change in his installer to even include the foistware and revert to his
prior unpolluted installer. If he doesn't make a change to eliminate
even the occasional screwups of his installer then he is unresponsive
and irresponsible and that should also be noted in any user reviews on
download sites for his software.

He already knows the fixes:
- Default the foistware to *deselected* in his installer. On those
occasions where his uninstaller screws up by not honoring the user's
selections, the default will be to not install the foistware and is
unlikely that anyone forgetting to disable their installs or wanting
them will be greatly disappointed that they did not get installed (to
dishonor their selection by doing the opposite of their selections).
- He should choose between proliferating his software as donationware or
adware, not both. Being adware overrides being donationware. If he
wants to accept donations (using PayPal) for his product then he
should NOT be proliferating foistware in his installations. If he
wants to proliferate the foistware then don't waste time hoping for
donations. Users will make one of two choices: install with or
without the foistware as whether or not they want to donate, or do the
separate donation or not. They shouldn't have to even consider having
to donate TWICE, once with a donation and another with the foistware.
- That the author has recognized some users are getting stuck with the
foistware despite deselecting it during the installation means the
author should immediately eliminate the foistware in his installer
until the problem gets fixed. He should revert to his prior install
process (without the foistware) and not afflict users in the meantime
with a oft or rare occurrence of dishonoring user selections.
The author really doesn't need to be told how to [temporarily] fix his
installer. If he was responsible, he would know the immediate fix and
instead ask for beta installer testers for his UNRELEASED version of his
installer. The product didn't change. He changed his installer. The
obvious shouldn't need to have to be pointed out to him.

I know that when I first started using Unlocker that it was probably the
best and easiest solution available at the time. I didn't even think to
start hunting around for a replacement to Unlocker; however, there are
other programs to do the same thing.

freeware; costs $20).
- Also donationware; however, it doesn't include any foistware. Because
no extraneous installs are listed, they cannot be enabled by default.
So this product qualifies as donationware and not adware.
o They use plimus.com to donate.
o Unlocker uses PayPal for donations.
- They use their own site for downloads rather than pushing users to the
iffy Brothesoft site.
- Does not load on login.
o Unlocker loads on login (as a registry Run key) but consumes a mere
52KB of memory space (but this varies over time and can be higher).
There is a constant UnlockerAssistant.exe process running on your
host whether you are having problems with locked files or not.
o Both Unlocker and Lockhunter install shell extensions to Windows
Explorer. You right-click on a file and can choose to run the
program on the selected file.

This was only the first Unlocker alternative I've found so far and there
may be others. I have no experience using LockHunter (I tend to stay
away from betaware). However, finding out if a file has an open handle
on it is an not new technology nor of finding out which process has the
handle open on a file.

I haven't even read the web page on this one yet. It says it is
freeware but I haven't installed (in a VM) to trial it yet. Softpedia
lists it as freeware (they would say ad-supported if it were adware).
It gives a lot more info on the locked file but its UI could be too busy
for the casual user.

One is OpenedFilesViewer by Nirsoft. I have several Nirsoft utilities
installed, including this one, but never even thought about using this
one to close the open file handle or kill the process that has the open
file handle. The listing tells you more shit that you probably ever
want to know at the time of having a problem when deleting a file. Of
course, you have to navigate your Start menu to click on the shortcut to
start this utility which is definitely not as easy as right-clicking on
the problematic file (and, no, I'm not installing more 3rd party
software that lets me add entries to the context menu for shell
extensions to file objects in Windows Explorer).

Thanks for pointing this out. I use "USB Safely Remove", which I find
really useful, so a freeware from the same company was interesting.
It's actually in Beta 3. I've just tried it in a Vista 32 bit VM, and it
seems solid. Unlocked an Outlook PST, and associated process, no problem.
Not that I recommend you try that on a PST that matters. Nice GUI too...

Well said, all of it. I couldn't bring myself to clip any of it. That
is, with one exception. I still think that spyware is the correct
terminology, because the software is added behind the scenes and without
the end user's awareness of the fact. The only reason I caught it was
that I used ZSoft Uninstaller to monitor the installation and reviewed
the changes after the install. Maybe if I'd had Third Party toolbars
enabled in IE I might have seen the toolbar, but like many other end
users, I don't allow that setting for security reasons.

I noticed this with the latest version of Unlocker. Previous versions
didn't have that delay.
Also, just judging by the screenshot here:
it's easier to use than Unlocker.

Unlocker has served me well for several years now. I hate to see it fall
by the wayside because of a mistake on the part of the author. Perhaps
he might reconsider what he's doing and even change his UI so that you
don't have to select "Delete" from a dropdown list. I really like the
idea of that big, red button in Lockhunter.
Just downloaded it and am going to give it a try after uninstalling
Unlocker on this system.

I looked in my "Programs and Features" Control Panel applet and saw the
Windows Live logon item. I checked the date and time it had been
installed, and it was only minutes before I looked. I knew that Unlocker
had put it on my system, so I uninstalled it. I remember thinking that
if it messed up Unlocker, I would reinstall it all over itself and
*then* uninstall the whole damned mess.

Besides, you're entirely missing the point here. If one person starts
setting up their install packages to ignore deselecting bundleware,
others will think it's okay and start doing it too. How would you like
to, for instance, install something and then later on find out that you
just loaded something like Gator on your computer? Or even worse yet,
have it become such a common practice that the first thing you have to
do after installing something is to check your computer out to see what
kind of adware or malware you just put on it along with the program?
Not that I'm convinced Cedrick did this intentionally. I'm more
convinced at this point that it was some kind of mistake.

You're right. Well, it's probably a temporary thing until Cedrick gets
the bugs corrected in his installer. I don't have a huge problem with
bundleware, that is as long as I can deselect it's optional installation.
For years, this group has considered other ware types than freeware as
being on-topic:
donationware
registerware
liteware
careware
postcardware
etc.
All these ware types can easily be arranged into an order of decreasing
desirability, and if I were to add bundleware to the list, I'd say it's
probably the least desirable. Still, there are far worse ware types. If
bundling keeps Cedrick in the black enough to continue making his
program available, then more power to him. That is, as I say, as long as
installing the bundled stuff remains optional. And easily so. That timer
on the "Next" button was pretty chicken shit if you ask me. I hope he
drops it.

Shortcuts created on your Windows desktop are not spyware. They are
just URL links to somewhere. YOU would actually have to decide to
double-click on those links to go visit those sites, and the installer
doesn't not attempt some phishing scheme by using an inocuous looking
title for the shortcut that then takes you to some site that attempts to
install something additional to actually do the spying. They're just
shortcuts (to eBay) like the other shortcuts on your desktop.
Is Bing Toolbar considered spyware? Well, YOU would have to enter
search criteria and then actually submit them to Microsoft's server
before any data gets transmitted from your host to theirs. That's all
voluntary and overt actions that YOU take to give them that search
criteria. I suppose it is possible the Microsoft sends other usage data
for use of its toolbar but they really don't have to. You have to
choose to send the search to their host. At Softpedia, they categorize
the Bing Toolbar as "ad-supported" which is their soft shuffle meaning
it is adware. If it were spyware, Softpedia would say so (plus it might
even get listed there).
So neither the eBay shortcuts or the Bing Toolbar are spyware. So the
installer for Unlocker is not installing spyware. It might not honor
your choice to not include that foistware on your host but that doesn't
make it spyware. Spyware actually means something has to spy on you.

the word out on it, as you did so well. Then, others do not use it
which circumvents the very purpose of creating/having it in the first
place. The best thing these pig "conjugals" could do is to give you a
free fully functional version that does not have the functions of a
"Pay" version. Then share a pay link for it. If you like it you get
the pay version with more options.

I really, really don't want to argue about this. However, just to set
the record straight, there were no shortcuts on my desktop and as I
said, I couldn't see the toolbar because I turned off third party
toolbars in IE8 on that system.

I don't see any harm in pointing out when an installer ignores a

That's how I look at it. However, in the case of Unlocker it does say on
the home page:
"Promotional feature: Fully optional eBay shortcuts, Bing or Quickstores
toolbar depending on location."
My bone of contention was with the way that, despite my carefully
unchecking the installation of the Bing Toolbar, it got installed anyhow.
Since version 1.9.0 is once again available for download, I can only
assume that Cedrick has corrected the problem.

No way! I've got it installed on the HP and I won't be taking any
chances of munging that computer's setup. Even though the bundled Bing
Toolbar and the other crap got installed, I was able to remove them via
the Programs and Features Control Panel module.
I can tell you that on *this* computer, I'm running 1.9.0 also, but when
I installed it back on July 7, it didn't install any bundleware.

computer and I had to jump through too many hoops to get rid of it.

Thanks for that info, Therese. This would imply that Microsoft is to
blame for the problem (surprise, surprise.)
As for why I wouldn't help Cedrick diagnose the problem by uninstalling
and then reinstalling Unlocker 1.9.0, that was because it was on another
computer of mine which is running the notoriously sorry excuse for a
Windows version, Vista. I'd just gotten the computer repaired and
configured to my satisfaction after four days of work. I was not about
to put that effort at risk. I did, however, send Cedrick the log file
from ZSoft Uninstaller as was as a detailed description of the
computer's hardware breakdown and OS.
As slowly and deliberately as I installed Unlocker 1.9.0 on that system,
I can assure you that the problem was not due to "user error."
Cedrick is to be thanked for his determination to get to the root of the
problem, but at the same time he deserves criticism for putting a
countdown timer on the setup's "Next" button, something he didn't
explain at all and which would confuse the hell out of a less
experienced user.

One issue is whether or not Cedrick or Micrsoft is responsible for the
Bing Toolbar being installed despite my having elected not to do so.
The other issue is that Cedrick chose to put a timer on the "Next"
button. YMMV, but I've never seen that done before.

I've seen scripts for installers. It is the installer programmer's
choice as to what actions are taken to perform ancilliary installs. I
suspect the Unlocker author screwed up his installer script perhaps
because he decided to get cute with a timed button. Of course, if he is
using someone else's installer product then it's possible there is a bug
there which ends up not honoring the attributes of objects defined in
the script, or the author didn't correct defined the state of an object.
If Microsoft wanted to push Bing out with users having no choice about
it, they'd dump it in the Windows Update site with no choice regarding
its installation. Bing doesn't install by itself. The installer for
Unlocker did that.

Oh well, I noticed that when using Unlocker 1.9.0 to delete a file on
this system (not on my HP with Vista though), there was a pronounced
pause of five or six seconds before the action occurred. I uninstalled
it and went back to version 1.8.8. End of problem and "don't fix it if
it ain't broken."
