Like this poster, I, too, need something like Transcript that handles
PDF files: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/iso-freeware-like-transcript-but-accept-open-pdf-files-t2474606.html
(Transcript app: http://www.jacobboerema.nl/en/Freeware.htm)

To further list why, which some of the responders couldn't seem to
understand in that above post, using windows built-in functions, etc.,
is way too combersome. An app is needed that will load PDFs quickly
and that shows contents easily so that we can type bits of text below
in the editor, as needed. I have hundreds of PDF files that were
scanned _not_ using OCR so that they are not searchable PDFs but are
picture PDFs which makes working with them is impossible. However,
for the small bits of text that I need to transcribe once I find them,
I'm not going to print out all those thousands of pages, re-scan
myself to searchable PDF and then search for the text and copy-paste
that text to a text editor. We'll live with the old files as they
are. I changed the settings on the scanner and left instructions for
other users on how to output to searchable PDF and so far all the new
documents are fine as they are. But I absolutely must have an easier
way to with the older hundreds (if not thousands) of files over next
few months and need a dedicated app like Transcribe that can handle
PDFs.

I'm currently using an explorer replacement that allows me to view
file contents in various zoom settings and use an open text editor
page but this is awful to use. Much easier if there is a proper app
for this.

It's too bad transcribe didn't handle PDFs but, well, there you are.

Does anyone know app like it that handles various file types, esp.
PDF?

Thx.

p.s., hopefully the app handles panes horizontally and not just
vertically, like the windows explorer replacement. Much easier to see
PDF on top and text editor on bottom instead of vertically. Thx.

That's an amusing conversation which took place back in 2006. The OP
using Win98se appreciates Transcript's function but wishes it would do
.pdf. The pooh-pooh/ing respondent doesn't see the need for Transcript
because he imagines it would work just fine to simply switch tasks
between one window with the image and another with the editor.

Along comes the developer of Transcript to rebut that opinion.
Unfortunately the Transcript developer didn't address the original .pdf
issue forthwith.

I've never had to do 'a lot' of transcribing from image or a graphic
.pdf. If I did, I might experiment with using tools in a .pdf viewer
which allowed typing/editing as opposed to window task-switching. PDF
X-Change viewer has a number of such editing tools in its Comments and
Markup tool section. If you used that, you would do your editing in the
tool and then copy and paste that text into an editor which you could
save from.

You could put that editing/ commenting/ marking-up/ tool's editor in
whatever position relative to the .pdf image you like.
