I wanted to cut out certain pieces from the PDF and could not find any
way to do it. It did have an eraser but not for text - just pencil
scribbles.

Could CutePDF do the erasing, or reduce the PDF to text?

TIA

Just use the typewriter or text box tools(PDF-XChange)and put blank space
over what you want to erase.

Thanks Dave.

I have managed to get a box to blank out a certain section. But what to
do after that - how to delete it or just cover up the text?

TIA

Use the text box tool settings,Fill color> white or whatever your
background is,Opacity>100%,border>0pt and it will cover wherever you put
the box with no trace of the edit. After that just save your doc.

Be careful. There was a recent news story about an MoD (Ministry of
Defence, UK) where a 'reducted' pdf document had lots of classified data
on it. The poor sap who released it used a trick similar to the above,
not realising that the underlying data (that you think you are covering)
was recoverable. A lot of classified data came to light.

Please flatten the text-box tool, if used to hide the selected area. The box can be flattened by right clicking the mouse and selecting flatten.
