I just ran Total Uninstall for the first time since re-installing
Windows, and it tried to surreptitiously install itself into my startup
folder. Thankfully WinPatrol caught it and I denied permission, and of
course when I did so WinPatrol closed the program. (I'm using Total
Uninstall 3, reportedly the last freeware version.) Before I uninstall
Uninstall, I thought I would check here to see if there's a way to
prevent this behavior. There's nothing in TU's "Options" that addresses
this. And I like the program, I just don't want it eating up RAM by
starting itself every time I start Windows...I may not use it that
session and would prefer to start the program only when needed.

Am I missing something? Any suggestions?

Thanks...ncSkeet

Under XP, if you go Start>Run>services.msc, you'll be given a
list of what's running as services at start up.

You could see if the Total Uninstall background launcher is in
there; then double click it and choose "disabled" from the three
choices under the drop-down menu for "Startup Type".

The last freeware version is Total Uninstall 2 ver.2.35 It does not
plant itself in any auto start position. I've never used 3, so don't
know about that.

I've had a copy archived here for quite awhile....

You said you ran it. Were you monitoring something with it? If so, it is
perfectly normal - nay, desireable - for it to implant itself to run after a
reboot. That is so it can *continue* monitoring any app that you are
installing that may require a reboot (and which may add stuff afterwards).
Once it finishes monitoring and you close the program it won't run again
until you start it.

Yep, you're right. It actually says "Try Total Uninstall 3" on the
bottom left. I read it wrong. My version is actually 2.35, just as it's
supposed to be. Maybe yours didn't, but it did try to install itself in
my startup.

I started it only to monitor a program install, so it was monitoring
that, but it wasn't running beforehand. I was just using it the way I've
always used it. This was the first time I'd started it since
re-installing it. That only made it worse in the sense that after I
denied it permission to add itself to startup, WinPatrol shut it down,
so it was unable to finish monitoring the install. And I don't remember
it ever doing that before (starting itself with a reboot in order to
monitor a program)...I'd been using it for a year or so before having to
reinstall Windows.

I am running XP. Good idea, but no dice. Thanks for the suggestion.

So you weren't paying attention. So?

TUN is supposed to put itself as a "run once" autostart. This is a
required function when the application install you are monitoring makes
you reboot your PC.

It's not dangerous, it's needed, and it only starts at reboot one time.
I failed to mention this in my tutorial / review.

Thanks for reminding me of that feature.

Failing all else, you could always RTFM (Read The Fine Manual).

>From the help file that comes with TUN 2.35 ....

Many install utilities requires that you restart Windows to complete
the process. Don't worry - Total Uninstall will close with Windows and
will restart when the Windows is restarted. Then you can continue to
take the second snapshot.

.....

it has always done that, luckily.
