I am using Thunderbird Ver 52.0 for writing messages

While composing my messages I have several Smiles/Icons that are .gif
files that I usually add one or so into the message.

Since upgrading to the new version, every time I try to add a smile to
my message I get a warning at the bottom of the screen:

Thunderbird has blocked a file from loading into this message.
Unblocking the file will include it into your sent message.

This is followed by the option to unblock.

If someone has been getting this and figured out how to disable this
warning and just allow for the smiley to be added to the message, I
would appreciate knowing what you did.

Thanks
JB

1. See the release notes here
<https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.0/releasenotes/>,
specifically the first 'change' item. To quote:

"IMPORTANT: The way images are included in a compose window has
changed. Images are now included as data URIs and not as
references to parts of other messages or operating system files.
This allows better interoperability with office packages such as
MS Office or LibreOffice. Images linked from locations on the
internet will no longer be downloaded and attached to the message
automatically. This can be changed for each image individually
via the Image Properties dialog or globally by setting the
preference mail.compose.attach_http_images."

2. The current release is ver. 52.0.1. Release notes here.

Won't that force the email to have a HTML content in order to place the
image data?

Hello,

I am running TBird 52.0.1 and have changed the global setting suggested to True. But, after relaunching TB, I still have the problem described as above.

Thanks for any further help on this nuisance...

Are these local (as in on your drive) or located somewhere on
a network ?

I most certainly did! :-)

It's pointless trying to pin down a problem if the 'problem' software is
not THE most up-to-date version.

You will no doubt have noticed that 'George' also pointed out that the
OP's version was not current.

Why didn't you help him then ? Why did you delete the question
?

Care to explain why ? There are no references to the bug in
the 52.0.1 changelog, so nothing was fixed. The question remains
pertinent.

And yet he WAS using the most current version...

The question remains - forever - on Usenet.

I agree.

*Not true*.

The OP said "I am using Thunderbird Ver 52.0 for writing messages"

The current version is Version 52.0.1, first offered to Release channel
users on April 14, 2017

Do, please, read here:-

To answer your question as to where the smiles/icons are. They are on
my Hard drive. Using the options button (which was set to point to
the directory of images) while composing a message, when you select
the image you want Thunderbird now opening a warning at the bottom of
the message screen area saying it was block and you can from there
select to unblock which than allows the smiles to be inserted into the
message.

Not being an expert at Thunderbird I am not aware as to what to change
to stop the warning and just allow the image file to be placed into
the message.

I use Thunderbird as an email client, so stayed with version
2.x. (that's TWO, not TWENTY) Later versions added nihil to it's
capacity to receive/send and read mail.
My concern was that IF it now uses the full link to inserted
images in the message body that could be a MAJOR privacy concern.

//"IMPORTANT: The way images are included in a compose window has
changed. Images are now included as data URIs//

As an example, imagine if you were someone sending a photo to
a forum like YouPorn. A posted message with

<file:///C:/documents_and_settings/Boater_Dave/Desktop/Me_and_Clive_having_fun.jpg>

Would be a bit of a giveaway.
Since I don't use the more recent and vulnerable versions,
maybe you could test and send a message with some inserted image to
yourself and then examine the source code of the message received ?

Did you compose HTML mail or a plain-text message?

Maybe GIF was blocked....

I have the same problem also. Anyone got a workaround? This is painful!

Hello to all,

Here's the solution:

In TB, click to compose a new message using stationery that has produced the file blocking difficulty.

Click the options button, and choose to "un-block" the offending file(s).

When everything is unblocked, go up to the menu and click File | Save As | and enter the location of your stationery files as you name your new stationery template something like FILENAME.HTM.

Finally, go into the Stationery add-on and use that newly created HTM file as a new template.

After doing that, when you create a new outgoing message using that new stationery template, the image(s) that had been blocked will appear properly.

All the best, and sincere thanks to Murray Carte over on the Mozilla Forum for explaining this method,

I have 30 templates already.
None of them give the images required.
I'm not doing what was suggested in the last post.
I need a solution. Not a workaround.
I'll have to dump Thunderbird for an email app that actually allows my own images without the crap.
