I usually use MyDefrag, but it appears that defragmenting it makes
unusable my system restore points.

Happy with JKDefrag(GUI) here, too. I saw this on The Consumerist so
I posted it for those who may be interested. I haven't tried it
myself.

Any idea what new features were added to versions 11 and 12 over what were
available in the old, non-supported, archived version 10? I couldn't find a
"What's New" for version 11 and then for version 12 to find out what would
be missing in version 10. While there is an online copy of the user manual
for version 12, I haven't found one for versions 10 and 11 so I could see if
they had a features list to then determine what got added in the 2 versions
after the discontinued version 10.

Does O&O Defrag include the ability to create a bootable CD so it can run
without the OS running within the hard disk partition that you are trying to
defrag? I ran into a situation where Diskeeper, PerfectDisk, and other
commercialware (which included O&O) would not move some tiny "system" files
(only one of the defraggers showed me a usable map so I could figure out why
they weren't working). I would still end up with some huge files staying
fragmented. Turned out the top commercialware defraggers refused to move
these "system" tagged files which meant they were slicing up the free space
in the partition so there wasn't enough contiguous free space to hold the
huge file(s) in one fragment. I had to save a logical partition image (not
a sector-by-sector image), and restore that image (which wiped the
partition), so these tiny "system" files are got stuck together and the free
(unallocated) sectors were actually contiguous to accomodate non-fragmented
copies of the huge files. It's been too long to remember if these trials of
commercialware defraggers included a test of a bootable CD so the OS wasn't
running in the same partition that was getting defragged to check if they
would then move these "system" tagged files together and make larger the
free space in the partition. I do recall selecting a boot-time defrag but
that still did not move the "system" files that the defraggers refuse to
move. I only recall that none of them would *thoroughly* defrag a partition
to move these special-use sectors and I had to do a reimage to accomplish
the task of getting huge files into 1 fragment. No, it wasn't really
necessary to get that extreme with the defrag but I wanted to see if any of
them could accomplish the task or if there was some other method of
accomplishing that test.

A few weeks ago GiveAwayoftheDay.com gave away Paragon Total Defrag 2010
Special Edition that I was able to create a bootable cd with. It's not
freeware but if you watch the site you might be able to catch it again
sometime!

I've used it several times, OK, but nothing special. I keep going back
to JKDefrag. (Don't like MyDefrag!)

The problem that has been noted by many users for a long time regarding
anything from the GOTD site is that you *must* install their download on the
day of the giveaway. If you install later, like to rebuild your host, you
will not be able to install the "free" software. The allowed install
interval has expired. They wrap the download with their phone-home manager
that connects back to their site to check if it is being ran on the day of
the giveaway. If their phone-home manager cannot connect to their site, the
install aborts. If the giveaway day has expired, their wrapper aborts and
the install never happens. Since these are utilities, there is a good
chance that you will need to reinstall them at a later time. Not possible
with stuff gotten from the GOTD site. I don't bother wasting any time with
anything offered by GOTD.
