My wife saw Windows XP's screensaver "Marine Aquarium 2" today in the
computer department of a local store---and she wants it.

I have searched the net for free Marine Aquarium screensavers, but have
found none. (What I *FOUND* was that the phrase "free screensaver" has
been redefined on the Internet to mean: "costs less than $25.")

Does anyone know where I can get Marine Aquarium 2 (or one similar to
it) for free?

Not Marine Aquarium but this one at:
http://simaquarium.com/
offers photorealistic fish. The free version is a plain tank -- no plants,
rocks, etc. -- but the water and lighting effects make it seem like you're
viewing a webcam located on the ocean bottom somewhere.

They seem to have changed the distribution somewhat. I dl'd mine a couple of
years ago as a standalone file. Now it seems you simply download one file.
Probably once you register, it unlocks the other tanks. I can't say for sure
though. Give it a try. . .

Thanks for the tip Michael, but that isn't going to work. Simaquarium
doesn't look "free" to me because it comes bundled with all of the
payware versions in a single downloaded file. That makes me very
suspicious.

Any other possibilities?

Unfortunately, no. I did an exhaustive search of freeware aquariums some
time ago and never found one better. I could email my file to you. It's only
2.3 megs but. . . it is an exe, so all the usual precautions apply. If
you're interested let me know where to send it. . .

I really like Marimo Software's Fishsaver2 v.1.2. However, the download
link at the (Japanese) website:

http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.marimosoft.com/soft/fs2/index.shtml&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522Marimo%2Bsoftware%2522%2Bscreen%2Bsaver%26num%3D100%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG%26as_qdr%3Dall

(translated page, and link may wrap)

doesn't work, so I'll post the download in alt.binaries.freeware for you.

Note that you must have a good video card to run this one.

Sorry, but I spoke too soon. The .zip file is 3 mb, and when I try to

I think this is the most recent: v 1.6 (fs2v16.zip 30-Dec-2005)

Program: Fish Saver 2
Author: Marimo Soft
Ware: (Freeware)
http://ring.atr.jp/archives/pc/forest/f/fishsaver2/

http://ring.atr.jp/archives/pc/forest/f/fishsaver2/fs2v16.zip
10616 KB

It's not getting any smaller. ;)

Hi John,

Well, it's been three hours and I don't have the message that you sent.
Swissinfo is a free email service and the 3MB file may have exceeded
their limit---I honestly don't know.

Thanks for trying!

Hi Susan,

I downloaded the file and activated it. It switched my monitor from
1024x768 to 800x600 and displayed a error box that was written in
Japanese.

Thanks anyway! I appreciate your help!

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't tried v 1.6 but version 1.5 works
fine on my Win XP box. I downloaded it from the archive above but it's
now been replaced by version 1.6. You might be able to find v 1.5
somewhere else. Look for fs2v15a.zip (9069 KB)

Evidently something in your OS/computer set-up is causing the problem
you had. . .

I downloaded v 1.6 and gave it a *quick* trial. No-install (unlike v
1.5) - I ran FishSaver2v1_6.scr after unzipping and it worked fine. I
didn't check out the various .ini files. . .

It did the same thing on my system, that's why I didn't recommend it.
And that's just about the only version you can download from the

Strange. I wonder if it has anything to do with installed codecs. What
codec pack (if any) are you using, Susan?

None.

FWIW *my* machine did weird things when I installed this version of Sim
Aquarium:

http://iquest.themes.tucows.com/filesthemes/SimAQUARIUM-Tank4-FreeTank-v2.3.exe
5395 KB

I made a couple of notes: worked the first day, then didn't with
message to change screen resolution. . . after experimentation
discovered it works with 16 bit color - does not work with 32 bit color
setting.

It worked on my XP box...I had to unzip it twice and leave the .scr file
in its folder. If I just copied the .scr file seperately it would not work.

Now that's weird. My version of this file is only about 2.3 megs. This must
be bundled with some of the pay versions. I'm guessing that once you
register, it will unlock some of the other tanks.

My file only includes the free tank AFAIK -- hence, the small size.

Okay, through foreign sites I tracked down the website for the original
file. It appears it's shareware according to this translated page at:

http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.marimosoft.com/soft/fs3/indexj.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dscreensaver%2B%2522fish%2Bflow%2522%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG

So it contravenes to John's strict interpretation of freeware and I fully
expect him to remove it from his system and cease to mention it in this
group ever again. :)

This looks like an interesting ss. Too bad there's no translation of the
various configuration setting. :(

Yup - recent versions are bundled. :( I posted this last November:

also note. . .

Hmm. Now this makes more sense to me. I'm running 32 bit color out of a
GeForce4 with 128 mb of onboard ram. If it's not the color setting that
prvents me from running the Fishsaver2 ver. 1.6, then it may be some
other conflict with my NVidia driver.

Oh well, I have ver. 1.2 installed and it runs nicely. It's a real work
of art and is in fact, my favorite screen saver of all. I like it even
better than the Skyrocket saver:

Very peaceful to watch those fish swimming around and all getting along.

The copy I have on my system (ver. 1.2) was freeware when it came out,
so I will not be removing it. Since you quoted my original statement,
you might want to notice that I specifically recommended version 1.2,
*NOT* 1.6.

If you have Japanese fonts and language capability installed in IE or
Windows, couldn't you copy and paste the settings text into Bablefish?

I also have this version and have tried it, but it doesn't work as good
as 1.2. The fish tend to run through each other as if they're all
ghosts. This happens occasionally in 1.2 as well, but only rarely and
the longer it runs, the less it happens. 1.4 is still a good one though.

This download is an older version of the one I run (only difference is
that mine has flooded "Tokio" skyscrapers in it) but it still works
nicely on my system. I scanned the download for viruses, and it's clean.
If the OP ("Anonymous") didn't get my email with attachment, then this
download is a good choice.

Not only that, but, for Michael Leplante's edification, here's a direct
cut and paste from the readme file that comes in the download:

"Fish Saver 2 is Freeware , Copyrights is held by Marimo Software."

Thanks for doing the research and posting it, Joe!

Nice to know it works on more than one machine. ;) v 1.6 does seem to
be a bit of a strange beast. I'm probably just displaying my own
ignorance but. . . I don't see how it can be set up as a Windows

I was just interested in the ware reference. . . I took Michael's
accusation that Fish Saver 2 is Shareware personally (even though it was
directed at you).

I have Fish Saver 2 listed as Freeware on the ACF program info pages -
AFAICT all versions of Fish Saver 2 by Marimo Soft are Freeware.

FWIW finding the *real* ware type for apps that are listed on the ACF
program info pages is *damned* time consuming. Googling Japanese web
pages for freeware references was a special challenge (since I don't
know any Japanese). When *misinformation* about ware types is posted in
ACF it makes me cranky. . . ;)

Good heavens no - but I did spend a *whale* of a lot of time ;)
yesterday checking ware types and making *follow-up* posts. . . and
that does tend to make me cranky. . .

Yeah, I could tell that was what you were up to but you accidently
jabbed me too and I reacted. Many sites call anything and everything
"Freeware". My goal for the ACF pages is to have *accurate* descriptions
so people can avoid the ware types they don't want.

I *used* to think that would be a fairly easy goal to achieve. . . ;)

I agree it seems an odd place to have "[license]". I increased the
BootCount number to BootCount=1000000 as a test - the app still started.

FWIW the opening scene changes with each increment of the BootCount
number. (You can repeat a scene by lowering the BootCount number by one.)

I had looked at "FishSaver2â}âjâàâAâï.txt" - came away no wiser as to
the ware status.

I can tell you what it means if you send me the text file. I tried to
download the file under FS2 but I got a 404. FS3 seems to be shareware.

Note that I'm not interested in downloading and installing the screensaver.

Susan,
Here are the salient parts (which I felt were important):

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fish Saver 2 V.6 "Virtual Sea" is a 3D screensaver using DirectX9.0C.
Schools of fish like bream, horse mackarel, sardine, and yellow tail swim around.
The size, thickness, length of the schools can be adjusted.

If you right click FishSaver2v1_6.scr in the directory after unzipping the
file, and select "Install" from the menu, the application will be
installed.

To uninstall, delete the FishSaver2v1_6 directory.
Versions after DirectX9.0c should be installed and working properly.
No entries are made in the Registry.

* Freeware
* Copyright held by Marimo Soft/Freetaco
* No responsibility will be borne in case of loss or damage to hardware
or software becuase of installation/running this software.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I suppose that covers it all? Let me know if you have any specific
questions.

Cheers,
Gururaj Rao (from Kisarazu-city, Japan)

And it would seem that version 6 (1.6?) is freeware after all. Still
can't get it to run on my system though. Can't even configure the thing
when I right click on it!

Strange that the folder names are all in English, but the help file is
in Japanese.

This makes me wonder if I need to install Microsoft language support for
Japanese to make the saver run.

I appreciate honyakusha going to the trouble to translate, but want to
be able to use Bablefish to do this for Japanese readme files in the
future. So, FWIW, I managed to get Firefox to display the readme file in
Japanese encoded characters. Then I was able to select, copy and paste
the file into the Bablefish website and to translate it. Here's what I
did (this works for XP):

First, I installed support for Japanese characters on my computer by:

1. Go to Control Panel/Regsional and Language Options/Languages tab/
2. Put checkmark by "Install files for East Asian languages"
3. Click "OK"
4. Put the XP install disc in the requested drive. Windows copies the
needed files from it.
5. Reboot.

In my case, Estonian keyboard support got added for some reason. I
simply deleted it from the list and the keyboard selection option icon
then disappeared from my tray.

Next, I started Firefox and opened the "FishSaver2ā}ājāąāAāļ.txt" file,
which I had unzipped from the fs2v16.zip file:

File/Open File.../ and navigate to the folder where I unzipped the
"FishSaver2ā}ājāąāAāļ.txt" file. Then I selected it and clicked the
"Open" button.

With the file open in Firefox, I next clicked on:

View/Character Encoding/Japanese (Shift_JIS)

VOILA! Now the file was displayed using Japanese characters. I then did
a "Control-A" and "Control-C", and went to the Bablefish website:

http://world.altavista.com/

Click on the area under "Translate a block of text - Enter up to 150
words" and press "Control-V"

Select "Japanese to English" from the dropdown, and then press the
"Translate" button.

Due to the 150 word limitation, I'm not sure that I got it all
translated, but it looks like it might have done so. At least it
translated enough to include the following:

"Fish Saver 2 is the freeware"

If anybody just needs to know whether a Japanese application is a
freeware or not, feel free to ask and I'll be happy to answer anytime. I
translate technical documentation between Japanese and English for a
living and dashing off a message after a glance at a readme file would
hardly take me any time. Least I can do for the benefits I have derived
from this group. :)

Thanks Rao. :) I'll ask *sooner* in the future (instead of struggling

Don't think so. Worked for me right out of the box and I don't have Japanese
language support. Of course, the configuration panel is full of gibberish
but once you run it, it updates the ini file. You can then open this in any
text editor to see the various settings in English(!) though the effects of
some are rather cryptic. I wish I knew how to slow the cam down. At times,
I'm like a scuba diver on crack, the way the cam keeps whipping around. . .

No, not at all. I made the offer especially because I use a Japanese OS
(Windows 2000). For most of you (without Japanese OS) installing all the
Japanese fonts might be overkill just to read and translate a Japanese
application that does not come up frequently. Moreover, other than being
a lurker and sucking off all the good information that many of you have
posted and continue to post here, I haven't done much. It'll make me
happy to give back a little to the fine folks here.

So feel free to post to this list if you need information on a Japanese
application and I'll do my best to assist!

The fonts don't seem to have any effect on my system's speed at least,
but I'd bet that they would on an older system. And of course, a literal
word-for-word translation from Bablefish is alway hard to understand
because different languages also structure their sentences differently
and use different phrases as well.

Michael,
Forgot to mention that I also tried manually changing the
configuration file, but no joy. And you're correct, installing the
Japanese fonts didn't help at all. My guess is that the saver probably
has a problem with my video card's drivers, although my video card is
almost exactly what the author recommends.

I have version 1.2 installed and running nicely and its (totally
English!) configuration window has a dropdown that contains a listing
for "wandering point". You might look for that dropdown and if it's
there, try changing it to something else and you'll "come down" from the
crack. 80)>
