Favorite Windows Explorer Replacement

What's your favorite and why?

Mine is currently "FreeCommander XE". It has excellent tab options,
good window options, good X64 implementation, all the configuration
options you can think of.

I also like Explorer ++, but it's a little buggy. System icons often
lag.

I also like Cubic Explorer. It has a very attractive GUI, good
features and options, but is not an X64 app.

Oh... specific 'why'. FC has a central bar you can open (I prefer the
horizontal layout) that make file renaming, moving & copying so very
easy. The bar is not enabled by default, but it is one option in the
varied menu.

Thanks Bill. I guess I've tried at least 15 myself, something's always
screwy or features left out.

That bar is a great idea. I don't use it, but I will eventually check
it out. I configure my Explorer replacements exactly like Windows
Explorer, but use the tabs creatively. FreeCommander XE is awesome for
this. I discovered that tabs can be used exactly like multiple panes,
and I'm having fun with that.

I wish FCEX was as pretty as Cubic Explorer, and I wish Cubic Explorer
was X64 compatible!

Loving the old Xtree file manager for DOS (but don't like the jurassic GUI
of ZTree) I'm looking of something so powerfull.

Please were can I get that "central bar" in FreeCommandeXE?

NTFS and LFN, XTree won't handle them or leave them as mess if
attempted. Hence only thing that approaches ZTree is Total Commander,
but neither are free.

I like WinXp's Explorer in full detail, maximum windowed real estate and minimum Toolbars. Explorer++ adds Tabs and some
useful features. Others seem a little too busy to me; as my most used functions are handled from the right-click.

Explorer++ does express some instabilities, but on the rare occasion it crashes; crashes cleanly. It's self-refreshing
isn't reliable here (WinXp-Sp2), but it configures to what I want.

I fire up 'XYplorer', now and again, because I have access to areas Explorer/Explorer++ doesn't readily see.

sorry, I should have clarified it. It's been so long since I set mine
up, I had to go look again.

view->split window->then choose %..........then above that in menu you
can choose 'split horizontal'... or ' ctrl H' toggles
vertical/horizontal. And no matter which % of split you choose, it can
be manually adjusted by mousing over it and dragging. (This can be
useful to show images using ctrl-Q for "quick view" in an image
directory.)

I like XP's Windows Explorer too. There are a few features I'd like to
add, but nothing that can't be done without.

OTOH, starting with Vista Windows' file managers began sucking badly.
Too many features were removed for no good reason other than social
engineering by MS. IMO, they wanted to dummy things down in preparation
for shoving Metro down everybody's throats.

Freecommander seems to be the most popular file manager replacement at
Snapfiles:

Hey John, you can make it portable.

*Install it in a temp folder.
*Copy the FC folder structure and re-name it.
*Uninstall FC in Control Panel or with Geek or Revo uninstaller.
*Re-name the copied FC folder back to original, and move it to its
permanent home.
*In FC configuration, tell it to save your files in the FC folders,
not in the Windows User tree.

It takes less time to make it portable than to write this up! :)

Yeah, and so I tried WordStar and also learned Q(uick)Edit, along with
a lot of others using shifting standards. Comes with the territory,
even though sometimes I do have to dig hard for odd things either
ZTree or TC will do, others won't. Pulling a site rape from classical
musical scores, just the other morning. I'd reconstructed a European
music university for specific instrument scores based on initial
filtering criteria for a rape date, so placed and downloaded by
directories to my computer. Found within TC a command filter on a
search result (e.g.- say, *A4.PDF), indiscriminately across
directories, for direct panel placement on results [as one of the two
interface panels for copying/moving to the other]. Whatever works, as
they say, or how else would you pull sometimes scores of chapters [to
an opus among other movements particular] for a book [compositionally
then whole in musicology], each constituent being physically embedded
and directorially linked to its HTML presentment.

I used to know every Q-Edit keyboard command and shortcut. What a
great program! I learned a lot of WS commands too, but moved on when
WP got popular.

Used to? They're probably ingrained and would come back in a flood if
you picked it up again. Provided you used the WordStar key assignment
template (no doubt it could also be configured for Word Perfect).
Strong editors and still are although aren't realized in the sense of
convenience or aims as the role of computers have changed;- MultiEdit
blew QEdit away when it streamed as much text as was defined to
available extended memory;- maybe a few token Pearl programming left
editors writing storefront web interfaces and whatnot.

They are identical. .paf is the PortableApps.com format; as far as I know.

Last time I used FreeCommander XE it was missing some vital features
(synchronize being one of them, I believe). I see a new version has been

Well, I think you're talking about the "preview" version, a beta, dated
130517. I checked over the features list and the screenshots. And
although I don't know if it's truly portable, at least it doesn't
require installation. Going to take a look at it.

Just be sure to download the "FreeCommanderXE_portable.zip" file instead
of the "FreeCommanderXE_setup.zip" file.

Just tried it out. WAY too buggy. When you add captions to the toolbar,
the height of the toolbar doesn't increase to accommodate it, so the
upper part of the icons are hidden and the text isn't totally viewable.
Also, the default theme has a weird color profile and there's no way to
change it that I can see.

I don't like using betas (and in this case, I'd actually call it an
alpha) anyway, so guess I'll pass on this "preview".

It has a couple of minor bugs, but fewer than the rest.

I don't use the labels, so didn't see the problem.

You can choose to use the Windows theme, and it gets rid of the weird
colors.
