My firewall made me suspicious. Even before the opening dialogue box
opened, several processes that needed internet access started. I
immediately stopped the installation to search for information.
This alarmed me:
http://download.cnet.com/MP3-My-MP3-Recorder/3640-2140_4-10902239-1.html
No mention of the program in SnapFiles nor Softpedia, IOW no guarantee
there for the software being clean.
(Note that MyMP3 is a different program.)

Rkverify.exe was downloaded on my computer. Info here:
http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/RRCFGJ44502682/RKVERIFY.EXE.html
RelevantKnowledge was also installed:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/malware/?Adware.Win32.SC+System+Tuner+3.4.0.2

Registred at Alexa:
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main/mp3mymp3.com

It seems to me that MP3myMP3 has gone the same way as Burn4Free.

Not sure about the negative comments above; perhaps they were
"cherry-picked" to make a point. The older version (v 2.0, still
available) was more favorably discussed here:
http://download.cnet.com/Mp3-My-Mp3-Recorder/3640-2140_4-10396920.html?tag=uo;uo

That said, I used to use this s/w. Sometime in the last two years, they
started bundling adware that you can supposedly opt out of installing
with the rest of the program. They state same right on the website. You
could call it a trojan, but AFAICT it's a Win 32/Agent application that
gets flagged. I can't verify just what it is, because ESET won't let me
finish a download!

The package may or may not contain malware but your selective choice of
comments do you no credit. You left out the other four reviews at:

2.html?tag=page;page>

6. Free and easy to use" (5 stars)

7. "Using it for 3-4 yrs, best software ever if works wVista" (5 stars)

8. "Records whatever you play on your speakers well." (5 stars)

9. "does what it says mostly...." (3 stars)

Average user rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.

As Ron says, there didn't use to be any malware in the package but
maybe that's changed.

Nice work on v 3.0.
I tried downloading both from the home page and found they were stopped
by ESET. The link to v 2.0 came through cleanly. I checked it with
Universal Extractor just to be sure and verified the files with
Malwarebytes and ESET. The only thing that was picked up on the C:\
partition of the test bed was the previously mentioned variant in FF's
cache from my earlier attempts to download.
IMO, it's a nice program; it's too bad you have to jump though hoops to
clean up the current version, but it may be worth it to those who want
to use it. While I don't agree with what the authors have done to it,
they have every right as long as you really can opt out of the adware.

I found the d/l by following F.Reeware's link and d/l from the home page.

FYI, Ron:
The author of the program comments the bundling here:
http://www.mp3mymp3.com/bundling.html
(which F.Reeware IMHO should have notified us about when announcing the
program)

I don't trust the author in his claims that
Quote
...installation is FULLY OPTIONAL and offered only during the installation
process.
Simply click decline if you do not wish to install any 3rd party software.
Unquote
The reason is that on my computer it was installed *before* the
installation process per se started, and because of the statements here:
http://download.cnet.com/MP3-My-MP3-Recorder/3640-2140_4-10902239-1.html?tag=page;page

This seems to be a parallel to my unhappy experience with Burn4Free. That
program's author also described, falsely, a way to remove the spyware.

Indeed, he just used this to try and clobber F. Reeware.

Hardly fair on the author who isn't hiding this. It's on the web site.

YW. I find it odd the link on the homepage to version 2.0 has the
bundled software that ESET flagged, but the link that Yrrah provided to
the old version 2.0 (also on Cnet) was clean. I'd like to play with the
extraction process he laid out, but I still can't d/l past my AV. <vbg>

surprise me he has stooped to this level (deliberately promoting

I agree.
But you don't have to write "sorry". I was not annoyed. I just viewed it
as a very interesting case. :-)

I did look.
What concerned me was that some software was installed immediately
*before* I got any choice to decide whether to install it or not. Quote
from the author: ...installation is fully optional and offered only during
the installation process.Unquote
I then investigated more thoroughly on the internet and found the warnings
on Cnet.
With my experience with similar software (Burn4Free), I wanted to alert
the readers of acf *immediately* that they should take care.
My intention was investigative in nature, hence my question mark in the
headline.

Ideally I still think postings should cover things like these.
However, I am very sorry for the unintended malicious form it took. If
there's no tolerance for disagreements and mistakes, there will be no
progress.

Yet another example of a forged post by Frank J. Camper (alias
"Ari") using the NNTP Server frell.theremailer.net.
