Any idea if it is worth having? How often do you use the old version? (I
used to have an older 'Pro giveaway' version, but I uninstalled it. I
cannot remember exactly why - I suspect it was <so what?> moment.

Any idea what it is for in the first place?
A PIM?

It's a "Free Unnecessary Programs Removal Tool" according to the web site.

Who decides if Soft Organizer is itself necessary (my question). I note
that it is possible to remove 'Soft Organiser' using itself, though I'm
not 100% clear how this is possible.

It's supposed to be comparable to the ex-freeware "Total Uninstall":

https://www.martau.com/

I installed an earlier version of Soft Organizer and it worked fine for
a long time, but then suddenly it seems to have lost the ability to
monitor program installations. Not only that, but it reverted to
something comparable to Revo Uninstaller:

"Revo Uninstaller acts as both a replacement and a supplement to the
built-in functionality in Windows by first running the built-in
uninstaller for the program, and then scanning for leftover data
afterwards, making it your best choice when it comes to completely
remove stubborn programs, temporary files, and other unnecessary program
data that is left behind after the standard uninstall process."

Soft Organizer seems to have done this to me despite my having monitored
several program installations. IOW, when I try to use the program to
remove a monitored installation, instead of doing a completely clean
uninstall (ALA "Total Uninstall"), it does a Revo Uninstaller Free style
program removal.

I might try downloading this latest offering and installing it over the
older version but I'm on the lookout for something else which is easier
to use and more reliable.

I use it all the time.
It's a file/registry monitor. Whenever I install a new program
or update an old one I run it. It logs whatever changed. On an update,
you can append any changes to the previous installer log, or keep it
separate.
Very useful for spotting "portable" software that isn't
portable at all, or programs that install unnecessary services or
"affiliated" programs.
Or programs that do that after an "I'm not malware" waiting
period.
If you uninstall a program it monitored, it will run the
program's uninstaller, and then clean up any registry/file changes
that the default uninstaller left behind.

I'm on version 7.51. Version 7.52 was the last one for XP, but
that was buggy(frequent crashes), so I "downgraded".
I have only ~600 logs. "Only" because I deleted over 1000 that
I ran as a check and showed nothing suspicious.
Me, paranoid?
No so much.

I decided to try this version of Soft Organizer.
After you enter the License Key, this Giveaway Version is comparable to
the Pro Version, except no Updates or Tech Support.
Only the Pro Version offers Tracked installation of programs.
In your case, it sounds like the program reverted to the Free Version.
Did it still recognize the License Key you had entered?

I just installed this newer "pro" offering and no problems. I think what
happened was that in the past, I'd originally installed the program from
an offering like this 9.27 one. Then, for some reason I've forgotten, I
reinstalled the program over itself and it might have disabled the
serial number, reverting back to the freeware version.

As I mentioned in a similar previous thread, HiBit Uninstaller monitors
installations and does a thorough uninstall job as well as other
functions. Be advised though, it appears that it comes from Iran.

Yeahhhh... sorry but I'm not really willing to take a chance on software
from a country which is not on good terms with the U.S. I mean, I really
sympathize with the Iranian people and all, but my computer and data are
very important to me.

Yesterday, I installed the new version you listed in the OP and input
the offer's new license key. The process went flawlessly.

However, when I tried to install and track a newer version of Winmerge
over an existing, older version of the program, the newer version of
Soft Organizer wouldn't allow me to run Winmerge's setup file. Clicking
on the button did nothing. I closed Soft Organizer and ran the Winmerge
setup file by itself. No problem.

At this point, I don't see any reason to continue having Soft Organizer
on my computer.

I just right click on whatever I want to monitor and "Run and
Trace with Soft Organizer". Since it monitors system files, you have
to have admin rights to do that. Not a problem with XP.
All executable files have that option. Even non-installers.
The option to associate with executables is in Settings -->
General.
It used to be on by default, maybe that changed.

I also have the option to trace non-executables. Open the main
window, click on "install with tracing". It makes a database of your
files and registry entries. After you've run whatever, click
"forward". It will compare "before" and "after" and show everything
that changed. You then have the option to exclude any irrelevant
entries from the log before saving it for future reference/reverting
your system.

Either you didn't set it up properly, or the newer versions
are very buggy. Or maybe your OS isn't allowing Explorer context
menus. I have no way of testing it for you.
As I said, I use an old version. The only annoyance I get is a
very occasional "like Soft Organizer on social media". It's like
asking me to "come get genital herpes with us". I just ignore that.

I tested Soft Organizer by updating my installation of Betterbird and
didn't have any problems.
When you get to the 2nd step of Install with Tracing, you select the Run
Installer button and give the program the path to the Installer.
After the Installer completes and then the Installed program has been
started and ended, you select the Forward button to go to the 3rd step.
When I tried Install with Tracing the first time I used Soft Organizer,
I selected Forward before selecting Run Installer.
Maybe that was your problem.

No, I'm more on the ball than that. Where it locks up is when the window
opens asking you to verify whether or not you want the setup file to
run. To get around this, one the screen before that one (where you
select the setup file you want to run) I right click and tell it to run
in Administrator mode. This worked, sort of, but Soft Organizer Pro
locked up at the end after it had scanned the system for changes. It
still was able to list the setup program as having been traced, but
since is the first time I've been able to get the program to work in a
long while, I won't know if it did until and unless I uninstall the
program I installed this morning (Ocenaudio.)
