Do we need a free phone OS

Hello,

I just wanted to know what you folks think about a freeware/open source
phone os.

I'm personally for a BSD derived system instead of the usual. If one
coordinates the phone system uploads I think we would better off but it
seems there will be lots of hardware wars to bring one to bear.
