Claws Mail is an email client (and news reader), based on GTK+,
featuring

Quick response
Graceful, and sophisticated interface
Easy configuration, intuitive operation
Abundant features
Extensibility

The appearance and interface are designed to be familiar to new users
coming from other popular email clients, as well as experienced users.
Almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard.

The messages are managed in the standard MH format, which features fast
access and data security. You'll be able to import your emails from
almost any other email client, and export them just as easily.

Lots of extra functionality, like an RSS aggregator, calendar, or
laptop LED handling, are provided by extra plugins.

Claws Mail is distributed under the GPL.

Any idea how this compares to the currently available Sylpheed product?

I've been trying to sort out the current situation with these apps.
Claws Mail was Sylpheed-Claws. It used to be that both Sylpheed and
Sylpheed-Claws could be found at:
http://sylpheed-claws.sourceforge.net/
and Sylpheed was the stable branch.

The Claws team seems to have taken over at SF. The Sylpheed site
http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/
shows some SF download links but Sylpheed files are NOT shown on the SF
download page and the link I tried didn't work. dunno what's up with
that. . .

meanwhile. . .

Windows binaries are available for Sylpheed. See:
http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/download.html

http://www.claws-mail.org/faq/index.php/Windows:_Downloads
"Where can I find information and downloads for Windows?"
"Sylpheed-Claws for Win32 is available as part of the Gpg4win package.
http://www.gpg4win.org/
Although the port isn't complete yet, it is much better than the
previous, GTK+-1.2 based port."

Thanks, Susan, for finding this out. I've tried the sylpheed product and,
frankly, it leaves a bit to be desired. A great idea, but the
implementation has a ton of bugs.

I'm sorry to hear that. Sylpheed was on the PL in 2003 and at that time
someone posted "I have never had a single crash or bug with Sylpheed." -
of course that was in response to someone who did have a problem. ;)

I didn't have any crashes, but there were other things that just drove me
nuts, for instance:

1. The wait time for display of news items was painful. At times I
thought I'd been disconnected.

2. A minor issue -- when you return to the list of news items, you have
to press enter twice to get past the current item. A bit annoying.

3 Worst of all -- unlike Opera, you can't delete news headers. You mark
them as "read" and then tell the client to show only the unread headers.
But the setting to read only the unread headers doesn't persist between
sessions, so you have to re-set it each time.

All in all, not a rewarding experience.

That is very strange. I don't experience any of those problems while
using Sylpheed-Claws in Linux but I have to say I haven't tried it in
Windows, so I guess its possible it isn't properly compatible with
Windows Operating Systems yet?, although will have to try to confirm.

Which OS are you using with it > Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro/Home etc?.

I'm using XP Home edition, with all the latest updates. It's interesting
that Linux doesn't seem to have these problems.

Perhaps an update to the Sylpheed program will fix some of these things.

Thanks for the note.

They are not providing Windows versions of Sylpheed Claws (now Claws
Mail) any more, just linking to people who are porting it to Windows.
So it should be up to those doing the porting to make it work.
Actually, the Claws project only gives source now[1], so it's up to
others to build for any platform. But the listed requirements[2] make
it look like they aren't interested in supporting Windows:

Linux or other POSIX-compliant Unix-like operating system
GTK+ 2.6.x or later

They also link to a build for cygwin. I don't use X with cygwin, so I
won't be trying that. I'd guess it works better than the Windows port,
but 2.6.1 hasn't been built yet. (There are instructions in those
readme files for building your own cygwin Claws, in case anyone has some
time to kill.)

I had no idea about the name change, and I just happened to have
installed Sylpheed Claws on Gentoo earlier today. When I saw this
thread, I decided to upgrade just to get any renaming hassles out of
the way before I got in too deep. Happily, when I just started Claws
2.6.1, it found the old config files and offered to copy them. It
seems to be working fine so far. I did have to remove the old config
files manually, but that's what I expected.

[1] They do host binaries for Ubuntu, but they are clearly marked
"unofficial".

[2] Not to be confused with the "optional requirements" they also list.

Thanks for the info. I think they're selling short by not supporting
Windows, but that's their choice.

In case you want to discuss it with them, there's a mailing list read
by users and developers.

To subscribe: <mailto:sylpheed-claws-...@dotsrc.org>

It's also available via gmane.
