Simple to use - just load the file, then save it .... (sorts automatically)

If you'd like command line support, lemme know and I'll add it for you ;o)

This also may suit Mike.

It's not specifically what you're asking for, but Note Tab Light

http://www.notetab.com/

is something I highly recommend for text manipulation and other
features. A little heavy for a notepad replacement (Metapad does the
job for me there) but the "Modify" menu has your sort feature along
with a lot of others useful for reformatting text to suit your needs.

List Alphabetizer 1.3 - Vasilios Freeware
http://www.vasileios.gr/freesoft/

System Requirements : Win98/Me/2000/XP - Size : 1.487.432 byts

Create Lists of your interest, short them in alphabetical order,
re-load and edit them, and print or save them as TXT, RTF and PDF
files

With List Alphabetizer you can create any kind of Lists, you can
alphabetize them with a single button press, or you can short them as
you like by moving up and down their items.
Editing and Numbering of Lists' items with the same name is also
supported.
When finishing, you can print your Lists or save them as TXT, RTF and
PDF files.
You can Load and Edit a previous created List.
List Alphabetizer can be used to create folders in a directory, with
the listed items as names.
The program now supports the abilities to List your computer's
Directories and automatic erases more than two same listed items.

Also will arrange listings in alphabetical order in a text file as
that is what I use it for.

Totally free and 0 download size. It's called "Sort" and it comes as
part of Windows. (No GUI, though, it's a command line program.) Sort
starting on whichever column you want. Type sort /? for a help list.

I rarely use command line. Old habits die hard, I still use 2XExplorer in
W2K, so to me, W98SE/ME/W2K all look the same. Those small executables work
for my needs.

Steve, yours was the first one I tried, a small executable (thanks), and
it works fine. It works best, I assume on a list of 1-line entries,
which is what I needed.

In a paragraph, it partially works, can't seem to handle a sentence that
is longer than some limit, I guess.

Still, just what I needed,

Thanks again.

It's "Modify > Lines > Sort > Ascending (or) Descending"

There is a WEALTH of text manipulation possibilities under the
"Modify" menu. Check out the help file from "Contents" and go to
"Reference information > Menu Commands > Modify Menu" and spend some
time drilling down through all the possibilities. Nicer still is if
you have certain repetitive tasks, you can customize your toolbar
buttons accordingly under "View > Options > Toolbar."

In other newsgroups (and emails) with many levels of quoting and line
breaks at odd places, the format used to get pretty sloppy. I set a
string of buttons for things like "Join Lines," "Split Lines,"
"Indent," "Unindent," "Quote," "Unquote," etc. I set the window to
break at about 70 characters in 12 point Courier New, so afrer
cleanup, I just hit the "Select All" and "Copy" buttons and had a
beautifully formatted message to paste into my mail/news client.

I spend much more time lurking than I do posting nowadays, so I don't
use that method much, but when I need to, it's there and quick.

EDXOR is a very very small editor. And has no icons, just a text menu
line.
To sort: Ctrl+A > Format > Sort

It took awhile to answer, I now use Xnews, still learning Find to search
for my posts. Thunderbird was easy, it was also unreliable for me.

Thanks for that, Ross. Edxor is great, it is my default text editor, will
try this tip.

If you use Edxor, do you notice that Find and Replace don't always work in
a long file?

The author says they work fine, but I find they don't always.

Haven't noticed. Maybe try with another setting, like turn word-wrap
off?

For Find and Replace, I more often use SRHTML98 or BKReplaceEm, both
of which recurse directory structures, and the second program is good
because it can use "regular expressions" i.e. complicated wildcard
substitution.
