Obviously, some people can't be bothered to check and prove their unfounded
claims, even when pointed to the relevant threads. This has been the case
for weeks and months, by now, with the Pricelessware 2008 CD creation
project, which occurred during the first two months 2009 and can be
recapped here (first messages of threads):

To search Message-ID's via Google Groups, append them to:

http://groups.google.de/groups/search?as_umsgid=
> e.g.: http://groups.google.de/groups/search?as_umsgid=glkuqp$5hd$1...@reader.motzarella.org

As can be seen from those threads, some people devoted much of their spare
time of more than two weeks to *ensure*, that only programs where included
in the PL CD creation, whose authors permitted it either by license file,
program messages, help file, on the website, and so on. If necessary (or
in uncertain cases) authors where asked for explicit permission.

Moreover, the need for the inclusion of source code for GPL-style programs
has been verified with the Free Software foundation:

Message-ID: <gm23go$4hm$1...@reader.motzarella.org>
> http://groups.google.de/group/alt.comp.freeware/msg/6070ef1b47bb9ed9

Programs like Media Player Classic or GParted LiveCD were excluded from
CD creation, because either the appropriate source code (correct version)
could not be found or the effort of assembling the source was simply too
high.

Other programs were omitted because of explicit export restrictions
(TrueCrypt, Wireshark) or uncertainties in such matters (KeePass, PuTTY,
UltraVNC).

Despite all the effort, the contributors of the CD creation project simply
did not have time to check all and every program in-depth. Sometimes, the
contact to the software authors was either broken or could not be found
out, at all. All such uncertain programs were /left out/ from the CD's.

After two weeks of tremendous efforts, two CD images were compiled and set
for download and torrent seeding. That's the main distribution way to all
people with reasonably speedy access to the Internet. As in past years,
volunteers offered to burn and send physical CD's to people asking. The
rules for this distribution scheme are laid down in the README.TXT in
the root of both CD images (and are therefore easily available to all
recipients of burned CD's):

| Redistribution of the CD:
|
| Pricelessware programs are included if the author freely allows redistribution
| and/or gave permission to the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup to include the
| program on this CD.
|
| You may make copies of this CD and distribute them to others. Recipients may
| be asked to furnish a blank CD. They may not be asked to pay a fee of any kind.

To prevent tempering with the images, every CD has a copy of DVDSig and an
MD5-Hash file. The Hash-files are also available on the Internet:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/Archives/2008PL-CD/dvdsig.md5
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/Archives/2008PL-CD/CD-2/dvdsig.md5

It, IMHO, is nearly impossible to increase the secureness of the process.
Considering all the above, it most likely is much easier for people who
want to unrightfully make money from the efforts of freeware authors and
acf Pricelessware selection participants, to just take the result lists
from PL2008 (which include all download addresses) and create CD images
of their own.

Following Occam's razor, the effort that went in the CD creation and still
goes into distribution is entirely altruistic. It is simply a way to say
"thank you" to freeware authors by spreading word about their wonderful
software. And it is a means to help people, who are in search for freeware.
Again, this obviously is a display of gratitude for all the goodness that
participants of the Pricelessware CD creation process received, receive,
and will continue to receive themselves from the freeware-interested
community.

Below follows an excerpt from the afore mentioned license checking threads.
Although I had to shorten some references and often had to select one out
of many messages discussing a specific program, the gist of the license
review process should be recognizable.

Since it took quite some time to prepare this list, I suggest everybody
who lazily took part in spreading unfounded accusations (without checking
the relevant threads) about the CD creation and distribution compensates
the freeware community by picking one program from the Pricelessware 2008
list and donating a /noticeable/ amount of money.

Since I have no reason to not trust everybody involved in the CD creation
and distribution (and venerate the immense efforts invested) this is all I
have to say on this topic. Even if in-depth analyses showed misjudgements
about one or more license phrases (I doubt it, but of course can not
completely rule them out), it would be because of personal error or
incomprehension and not because of intention.

Actually, I believe the Pricelessware CD license checking to be more
intense than most commercial Freeware-CD creation projects.

BeAr

I have not concerned myself with the legalities of a CD containing
freeware. Such is only a concern to those who compile them and if
anything objectionable is contained on the CD, I'm sure if any author
objects, he would make contact.

I have posted about my lack of concern on the CD issue.

However, this does not in any way change the facts of the PWH Cult
behavior and the harm they cause to ACF...as you try to do in one fell
swoop. You are simply wrong, and the archives prove factually you are
wrong.

The forgeries in this group are creating a muddle. It's crazy. Is that
message really from Me.Here? It was sent through Eternal September the
forger's favourite. He said he was only using Astra.

It's gone wild in here. How to stop it?

'BeAr' has done what should have been done ages ago. His post won't stop
the k00ks, I agree, but what it will do is become a reference that can
be cited whenever they try to persuade others of the legitimacy of their
k00kish lies, such as the recent allegations made at DonationCoder, and
the cross postings to other groups.

Any reasonable person can now see that due diligence was done. End of.

Don't be so negative Jack.

Well done 'BeAr', pain in the arse I'm sure.

It was a lot of effort to put that together, but now there's a single
Message-ID to point to that exposes the lie for what it is. It won't
stop the lie from being repeated, but when it shows up in other groups
or in new threads here, the MID can be quoted along with the challenge
that the liar can't provide a specific program name to back up the
false accusation. Good work, BeAr!

BeAr's post proves this matter as conclusively as can be expected.

However I don't expect trolls by Chris Millbank (Hummingbird) and
Bottoms trolls will acknowledge what has been written. The aim of
trolls is to stir up dissent on ACF/Pricelessware and to damage its
reputation. They conveniently ignore all the facts.

<snipped crock of self-serving shit>

When I was 10, I wrote my parents a long note telling them about all the
tests I had gotten As and Bs on. Your post reminds me of that childish
attempt to distort the truth. A load of shit scrambled around to divert
and confuse and, hoping in God, that they would ask for the *real*
report card.

The *real* PWH report card in this case is not a bunch of Pricelessware
goons telling us about their As and Bs but a posting with the *authors*
of the freeware of their specific permissions to the specific distro
methods, fee collection and other tangible Pricelessware activities.

Verifiable signatures, contact information, etc you know just like on a
report card you take to your parents, assclowns.

Nice try though but the scam goes on.

Accusations are about malicious activities, you got your words crossed

Pricelessware has the permissions, I don't and obviously BeAr doesn't
wither. the proof is in the permissions (which don't exist).

Produce the author's permissions and all debunking will be clear. Don't
and Pricelessware remains a scam run by scammers illegal on an

More Ron May claiming to set rules. This isn't Maynet, it is Usenet and
reality has crossed over into it.

The reality is that it is incumbent on the Pricelessware goons like you
to show that you have the authors' permissions in writing to the
Pricelessware use of their freeware.

Seconded.
Life is too short to waste any of it on idiots.

IMO saying the malicious trolls "would soon be gone" if we ignore them
is an unwarranted conclusion. Street people preach their "message" day
after day despite an almost total lack of response from others.
Similarly, in ACF the trolls talk to themselves with sock puppets and
forgeries. ISTM the behavior/response of other people is irrelevant in
both cases.

Diagree. On the basis of experience in other ngs.

Here's how this works, again, I draw you and the Pricelessware goons
back to the illegalities and realities you have created.

Personally, I could care less if I have an audience, responses or Ron
May sucking my big toe. All I care about is your prosecutions for
scamming the hell out of countless numbers of freeware newbies.

Toodles.

It's still better not to respond to the trolls. All it does is create
more noise, and responding to their k00kery as if it merited an answer
only rewards the behavior. There are many strategies for reducing or
eliminating the disruptions. One person generates about half the
garbage. Another generates maybe half of the remainder. The rest
mainly involves two or three others. Like email spam, it's nearly
impossible to eliminate, but there's a certain predictibility that
makes it easy to dump most of the garbage without having to read
through it.

erm. . . Talking about "how to deal with trolls" is a RESPONSE to the
trolls' posts.

AFAICT the noise level in here DROPPED after BeAr made the post that
started this thread => sometimes the "conventional wisdom" re dealing
with trolls is wrong.

ATM there are 44 posts in this thread. *IMO* there is only ONE valuable
post (BeAr's initial post). *IMO* the rest of the posts are noise
(including my own posts) => EOT for me.

Just my 2 cents worth, YMMV etc. etc.

"Pricelessware CD 2008 license checking summary" is the subject yet the
Pricelessware goons have referred to "trolls" ten times in the last five
posts.
