Siteadvisor.com says Free Download Manager loads the registry with
strings and contacts a bunch of servers:

The software itself is excellent and I've found it to be great in
speeding downloads, but that rating makes me wonder about it.
They said they didn't find any spyware per se, but gave it a
nuisance rating of 3 because of the server links and the numerous
registry strings added. Some rave about this software, but I think
I'll switch to some other program.

I guess you could just add all those unwanted servers to the
hosts file, but I don't know for sure. Would that make the
software stop working?

I've had good luck using "FlashGet." But Mcafee's "Site
Advisor" gives it a red flag warning.

If it is adware or spyware, as far as I can tell, no problems
have shown up from it on my computer, and none of the
anti-spyware or anti-virus programs that I'm running have
detected any problems from it, either. I've used FlashGet to
download plenty of files over nearly a year since I installed it.
It seems to work just fine.

There must be other freebie download programs out there that
get a better Site Advisor rating than this.

I've been using FlashGet v1.65 (registered) for some time and have
found no spyware or adware issues with it.
Running Ad-aware and Spybot regularly pick up nothing and FlashGet
is incredibly fast.

The very notion of their providing links to these begs the question of
morals .......

In addition, unless I'm mistaken, this so-called freeware also appears to be
"sponsored" by Yahoo ..... which is likely where the URL's referenced are
coming from.
