This used to be a Firefox extension, but when FF moved to WebExtensions,
it turned into a free-standing program instead. I have used it to check
the validity of my bookmarks in Firefox and Pale Moon for a long time.
__________________________________________________________________________
AM-DeadLink can check URLs for dead links and redirections from the
following sources:

Text files
Tab delimited files
CSV files
HTML files
Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox
Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, IE

Note that since version 4.7, it's no longer possible to alter or delete
bookmarks from browsers, you can however still use the program to check
CSV or HTML for dead links. (John says: You would export your bookmarks
[AKA "favorites"] to one of the supported formats, check that resulting
file and then use the results to manually delete bad bookmarks within
your browser after verifying that the result is valid by trying to open
the link.)

Why bookmarks cannot be deleted directly in AM-DeadLink: Browser
bookmarks should only be deleted within the browser user interface, not
via external tools. Changing bookmark databases outside of the browser
will be in conflict with various functions and will also produce side
effects when synchronizing bookmarks between devices.

Changes in version 5.0:
- Text documents supported
- Microsoft Edge supported
- Brave browser supported
- Opera browser supported
- Double clicking a bookmark will automatically open the URL in the
selected browser. That means, Chrome bookmarks will automatically open
in Chrome, Edge bookmarks will open automatically in Edge, etc.
- Check HTML documents: Check for missing CSS/Javascript/Image files
- New option: Show warning if URL redirects from HTTP to HTTPS
- High DPI support
- Internal browser (which was based on Internet Explorer) removed.
Double clicking a bookmark will open the bookmark in the related
browser.
- Many smaller changes and improvements

Two additional things to mention:

1. During installation, you have the option to install the program as a
portable version.

2. If you already have an earlier version of the program installed
(non-portable) the setup file will nicely update that copy to this
version (5.0).

I did, as you say, use this in Firefox(?) years ago without any problem,
but I downloaded and ran this new version and it flagged about a third of
my bookmarks, most of which I know are perfectly fine.
I use Edge these days and was surprised to see that when I tried to open
one of the 'faulty' links through deadlink itself, it tried to open
Chrome to do it.

In the past, I've seen some flagged that were taking too long but
ultimately loaded.

I've looked for other programs in the past that can check bookmarks, but
had no luck. Maybe somebody in the group knows of something that can
also do the job.

I'm running the program as I type this. I'll get back and let you know
how it does.

The first time I ran it, it worked great. I went through all the bad
links and either deleted them or corrected them.

Then I ran the program again to see what would happen. When I did this,
I got a lot of websites listed as being bad that weren't. And they were
mostly different ones from the original list.

Maybe the websites listed temporarily blocked the program from opening
them because they thought the program was a robot (which it kind of is,
actually.)

Truth is, on the second pass I got far fewer programs listed. Probably
about 1/6 the amount listed on the first pass.

I'm still going to use the program. I think it does a good enough job.
Technical limitations are huge, give the task it's accomplishing. It
does the best it can.
