Does anyone here know where to find that last known good freeware version
of version Digital Volcano Duplicate Cleaner, version 2.1.0?

The trick for Digital Volcano Duplicate Cleaner is finding a source for the
last known good freeware version of 2.1.0 which contained all the features
before they were split up into the freeware crippleware & the pro payware.

Here's my log file, where I failed to locate that last known good version.
o Maybe someone on a.c.f knows more than I do in order to find it?

1. Start at the Digital Volcano canonical web site:
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/index.html>

2. Click on the link for the Digital Volcano Duplicate Cleaner Downloads:
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/duplicatecleaner.html>
At the bottom look for "Duplicate Cleaner Free 4 (Limited version)"
For Microsoft Windows 10, 8, 7 and Vista.
Version 4.1.2 (View Changelog)
Limited free version
Size: 5.9 MB
Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or greater.
[Download via CNET]
<https://download.cnet.com/Duplicate-Cleaner/3000-2248_4-10584403.html>
[Download Local]
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/download/DuplicateCleanerFree4_setup.exe>
Name: DuplicateCleanerFree4_setup20201030.exe

SHA256: D9D2E9EC3752CBD70C7ACC3FE1D9B8AB275C8685632425EB14C8D2199A4D5D32

3. But you want version 2.1.0 which was the last free version that
had "all" the features.
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/dcdownloads.html>
See the link titled: "Other versions" & "Other Downloads"
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/dcdownload_versions.html>

But that only has version 3.2.7 Duplicate Cleaner Pro 3 (XP Compatible)
For Microsoft Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP
Version 3.2.7 (View Changelog)
Size: 8.2 MB
Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2 or 3.5.

And it has version 3.2.7 Duplicate Cleaner Free 3 (XP Compatible)
For Microsoft Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP
Version 3.2.7 (View Changelog)
Limited free version.
Size: 5.2 MB
Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2 or 3.5.

4. Googling for the last known good version of 2.1.0, we find:
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/board/viewtopic.php?t=699>
But that brings up right back to here:
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/dcdownloads.html>

Does anyone here know where to find that last known good freeware version
of version Digital Volcano Duplicate Cleaner, version 2.1.0?

The high expense of freeware is in finding that which works best.

If that's not good enough, try changing "20110923152937" to "*" and
continue the search.

https://web.archive.org/web/20110923152937/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner/downloaddcmenu

And yes, it's a bit tricky navigating there. Whack-a-mole tricky.

That downloads v3.0.0.1 which has an "audio" mode but no
"image" modes.
Archive.org used to list all the downloadable files at the top
of the screen, so you could download by date. That feature seems to
have been removed. It's a pity, it was great for downloading previous
versions and comparing them.

https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner/downloaddcmenu

Takes me to a Archive.org "terms of use" page.

I have both versions 3.27 and 1.47 "installed". I prefer the
latter, has the all the basic functions(no audio or image modes
offered) and a less cluttered user interface.
3.2.7 has image mode, but "only for paid version".
I use 1.47 it at least once a week to clean my backup folder.
Works for all duplicates(checksum/hash checking).

I have been using DoubleKiller.exe for ages.
From:> http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller

If you can still find it.
It shows multiple copies and lets you decide what to keep.
It searches whole trees.

It looks like the labels are useless in there.

The archiving done against those sites has been modified
after the fact.

I mean, you would suspect as much, from the "holes" in the
date display. Stuff labeled as "download 1.47" for example,
downloads version 3.x.x, and that didn't happen by accident.

I think even the CNET one I tried, had been bodged.
(An older version replaced with a newer version.)

You would need to find one of the "unreachable" archives
(doesn't respond to takedown notices) to get that now. And
what are the odds of a URL being acquired that points to
such a thing. If links to it have been removed from indexes,
it's going to be pretty hard to find.

It's not 1984, but it's pretty close to it.

If anyone's interested, I can upload the original 1.47 file,
complete with checksums.
I think "oldversion" had it, but alas, oldversion is no longer
with us.

I found it, but Jotti flagged it as malware. Probably a false
positive(Install-core, a program that downloads third part programs
and installs them behind your back), but better be safe than sorry.
I downloaded the PRO DEMO version, and that came up clean...
It appears to be knackered though - you cannot delete any
duplicates found.
But thanks for the suggestion.

Double killer needs no install, just run it.
Has not caused me any problems.
Used it on 3 different systems, one of which had a few hundreds
of duplicates(Save phone, but not remove from phone,
so duplos all over the place.)

Hi Sjouke Burry,

Thank you for being purposefully helpful in providing alternative freeware
solutions to the stated problem of finding good duplicate cleaner freeware.

Here's my ad hoc log file of the installation process, so that others can
always benefit from your advice, where links are provided to make it easy.

DoubleKiller version 1.6.2.82 for finding/removing duplicate files.

0. Set up a place for permanent archival of the DoubleKiller installation:
<http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller/>
x:\software\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller\doublekiller.zip
c:\app\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller\doublekiller.exe
c:\menu\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller.lnk
Taskbar > menu > cleaner > duplicate > doublekiller
<https://i.postimg.cc/xjJvchg7/duplicate01.jpg>

1. Download DoubleKiller 1.6.2.82 2007-07-07 to your permanent archive:
<http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller/>
<http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller/download.htm>
<http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/downloads/doublekiller.zip>
Save to x:\software\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller\doublekiller.zip
Name: doublekiller.zip
Size: 400720 bytes (391 KiB)
SHA256: DD40EFD213F904C418024AE06AB9974DE188EDBE236F4AEF0CDA0F692D4F5AC5
Extracts to:
Name: DoubleKiller.exe
Size: 812544 bytes (793 KiB)
SHA256: 3034A3ECF90594EC2E58A9C882F17F12051551FA6DC85CB0B65B0875444ED15F

2. Move to the app hierarchy:
move doublekiller\ c:\app\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller\

3. Create a shortcut & populate the Windows taskbar pulleout menu:
c:\menu\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller.lnk
TARGET: c:\app\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller\doublekiller.exe
STARTIN: c:\app\cleaner\duplicate\doublekiller

4. Start doublekiller from the taskbar accordion pullout cascade menu:
Taskbar > menu > cleaner > duplicate > doublekiller

On every tab is a big [Run] button; press it; select a folder.
Press [Run] again.

Hi Paul,
Regarding Digital Volcano Duplicate Cleaner version 2.1.0 archives
o <https://i.postimg.cc/QxzKgvdr/duplicate02.jpg>

Thanks for looking for the last known good version of Digital Volcano
Duplicate Cleaner, version 2.1.0 (before they split it into the free
crippleware and the more functional payware).

As you surmised, Digital Volcano seems to be pretty good at removing the
last known good version v2.1.0 of the freeware from Internet archives.

I went to that suggested URL for the wayback machine:
<https://web.archive.org/web/20110923152937/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner/downloaddcmenu>

Which, when I tried, downloaded this purported version 2.1
<https://web.archive.org/web/20130206161834if_/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/download/DuplicateCleaner_setup.exe>
Name: DuplicateCleaner_setup.exe
Size: 4045859 bytes (3951 KiB)
SHA256: 55FA0B27C84CAEA5D89B93BDF3DB764AF7BEF4035E61F8216AB4E93A50F7E999
Which, when I doubleclicked on it, appears to be version 3.0.1
o <https://i.postimg.cc/PqnZLCzC/duplicate03.jpg>

As you noted, I'll keep looking to see if I get lucky as there were,
apparently 85 wayback machine captures of this site, according to:
<https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner/downloaddcmenu>

I think the date they split the fully-functional freeware into
crippleware/payware seems to be after they released in 2011:
<https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/board/viewtopic.php?t=699>
"Sun Aug 28, 2011 8:55 am
Duplicate Cleaner 2.1 is available for download!"

I've never really used Wayback before (other than to watch Microsoft
Support download Office 2007 from it right before my very eyes).

So I tried hitting the calendar option and, as you did, I found a
"snapshot" of the digital volcano pages on Aug 15 2011 with the next one
being Sep 3 2011:
<https://web.archive.org/web/20110903081200/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/content/duplicate-cleaner/downloaddcmenu>

Unfortunately, as you already surmised, it's the same URL & file as before:
<https://web.archive.org/web/20130206161834if_/http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/download/DuplicateCleaner_setup.exe>
Name: DuplicateCleaner_setup (1).exe
Size: 4045859 bytes (3951 KiB)
SHA256: 55FA0B27C84CAEA5D89B93BDF3DB764AF7BEF4035E61F8216AB4E93A50F7E999
--
BTW, I had tried Wise Duplicate Finder version 1.2.5.27 in between,
but deleted it almost instantly due to it being super crippleware.

UPDATE:

I recently installed two duplicate cleaners and as I am wont to do, I added
them to where they belong in the default taskbar accordion cascade menu:
o <https://i.postimg.cc/QxzKgvdr/duplicate02.jpg>

I always knew the default Windows taskbar accordion cascade menu pullout
shows the filespec to the shortcut as shown below in this screenshot:
o <https://i.postimg.cc/cCwdrZsQ/taskbarmenu03.jpg>

But I only noticed today that if the "Comment" field is filled in, that it
is what shows up in the Windows default native Taskbar pullout menu tree:
o <https://i.postimg.cc/9FHWs4p1/taskbarmenu04.jpg>

In summary, organizing your Windows system is trivial if you think ahead
o <https://i.postimg.cc/xjJvchg7/duplicate01.jpg>

Where using the shortcut comment field is yet another way to help organize
your Windows native default Taskbar start menu pullout tree:

o <https://i.postimg.cc/qvJDMQcq/taskbarmenu02.jpg>

I'll run it on a test machine. Anything attempting to "phone
home" will be flagged. After the usual quarantine.
I'm pretty sure it's a false positive...
I didn't understand the part about "save phone". Do you mean
export phonebook to VCF?
VCFs usually record the date ... so no files will be
identical.
