Hi Ceg! :-)
Also take a look at Volkov Commander ( http://egner-online.de/vc/ )
and at one of its clones
( http://freshmeat.net/projects/ndn/?branch_id=56390&release_id=248048
).

You wont run W95 or 98 very well on 48 megs of ram.
Win3.x should do fine, and you can probably find it for download if
you look. I'm not condoning piracy, but i have seen it for d/l, and
MS dont support it anymore.
It had 3.1 on it when I got the laptop. I put 95b on it. It seems to be
doing well, but 98se bombed out.

None of which are freeware though (Windows 3.x isn't either)

Insert something clever here.
Not sure if your looking for an actual GUI for DOS? If so though maybe
try GEM:
Maybe also FreeDOS which with the full version has OpenGEM with it:

ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/1.0/
Download fdfullcd.iso from either of those links.

My first PC had W95 preinstalled, as well as 8 megs of RAM. But I soon
had to upgrade to 24. Later I upgraded to 48.
W95 back then worked just fine under those circumstances. However, using
it today with a graphical browser on the Internet of today with bloated
web pages all over the place would not be recommended. But I wouldn't
let such an ancient OS on the net of today in the first place.
> Win3.x should do fine
This one would suffer from the same problems as above. Running the OS
and the UI is no problem. Running any near-current software on it (IE5
etc) to browse the current Internet it would still run into problems,
both performance and security.
I don't know the intentions the OP has with this computer, but if he
wants anything current and lightweight on it the options are not
produced by Microsoft.
mainly text work, some QB, general jacking around and bs. the main thing
i'm wanting to do is hook it into my desktop just for email and checking on
my servers. at my age i'm finding it easier to read the lcd screens than
regular monitors.
i'm not like the original tandy 100 fans....i'm not looking at this laptop
to be the be-all kind of thing.
I remember Magic Desk. It was great in it's day.
Good for young children, with pages of large icons to launch programs.
And they could not escape to DOS without knowing a certain keyboard
combo.
