SyncBcack Free runs from individual profiles that, once created, then
can be combined to run together as examples, in instance, on the one
hand, each with a discrete logged output to be subsequently examined
for what they really would have done if, figuratively, one wanted to
implement more. Whereas there is a configuration option permitted to
provide from more than one head, so to speak, were profiles such a
head, of course, such that all heads are either to run simultaneously
when not selected for obviously, on the other hand, consecutive
profile processing. Indeed sometimes copying portable SyncBack
entireties to different locations may be more advantageous to focal
locales than extemporaneous directory creations, within one SyncBack
locale, a user might provide to contain over instance of more than one
profile sets, then to substitute for another set of profiles, over a
potential of as many 26 logical drives defined, or more, across
hardware or within OS platforms on such as Oracle's virtualization.
The drive profile sets and preference operatives initiated are all
associations contained within the same directory as the SyncBack
executable, at least in 2006 they were.

Syncback (free version) has a portable. I am not 100% sure however if it
is 'pure portable' or if it leaves gunk outside of its own folder.

SyncBack Portable available from this page:

Beware of some of those. The favourite ('Duplicati' for Windows) has
download file which is marked 'beta' and is an .msi fil. Do you trust an
.msi installer from MS as a 'portable' program?

This thread is interesting to me because I only need to back up data
o (where a simple "copy" works just fine)

That's because I save all program installers at the time I obtain them
o (they're saved on an external drive for use on all machines)

With MCT, there's less need than ever to save the system media nowadays
o (although I do save, once a year, a Windows 10 current iso on DVD)

Even my taskbar menus are saved (along with the data) for re-use
o (as are all my customizations saved in a syslog file on external media)

Nonetheless, it's always good to add reliable freeware to my pgm archives
o (where backup/restore gets mixed in with installationloggers/removers)

I apologize that I need to re-organize my freeware archives better:
o (but to help others, as always, here's back4sure added to them!)

I think it's a weird way of packaging software, but some
nutjobs use it.

Unpack with lessmsi

https://sourceforge.net/projects/lessmsi.mirror/

Delete all but the application folder and monitor what happens
when you run the executable.
I've had some nice surprises(fully portable) and some very bad
results, which I reversed with the monitoring program.

I notice that there's another home page here:

http://lessmsi.activescott.com/

and that it refers to a GitHub page for the project here:

https://github.com/activescott/lessmsi

and the download (which is a serious PITA to find) is here:

https://github.com/activescott/lessmsi/releases/tag/v1.7.0

I downloaded this file as well as the one available at SourceForge, and
their hash files match.

I have version 1.6.1.0 of the program which is called "Less MSIerables
(lessmsi)".

+1 I've been using that program since Bear Bottoms (yep!) recommended it
to me years ago. It does incremental data backups flawlessly, works with
thumb drives even. Very highly configurable and once set up properly, is
very easy to use.

o Extract files from MSIs. Edit MSIs. Create custom MSI databases.
<https://www.jsware.net/jsware/msicode.php5>

For example:

jsMSIx.exe - A simple GUI program. (Compiled EXE file.) Runs on all
Windows versions. No installation necessary. The easiest option. The most
complete MSI unpacker program available. Free.

Windows Installer Unpacker for MSI/MSM Files - An HTA. (A program
written as a webpage and powered by VBScript.) The most flexible option.
Runs on all Windows versions. For "power users" who may want to inspect an
MSI by feature, component, etc. Also includes tools for repackaging MSI or
MSM contents as a normal installer.

Simple "One-Click" MSI Unpacker - A simple VBScript. (A plain text file.)
No interface. Just drop an MSI onto the script and it gets unpacked. The
script functionality can be customized by anyone who knows VBScript. (Runs
on all Windows versions but may not work as drag/drop on many Vista/7 PCs
due to problems with permission settings.)

Recently had a spate of false positives over a pair of 2Tbytes' files.
Possibly 500K files involved with some apparent duplicates SyncBack
reported as different, whereupon when drilling through them for
comparison, I really couldn't see why they were flagged differently
from source/target profiles that appeared identical. In any event
there weren't that many files, and I wasn't actually doing anything
more, based on the SyncBack flags -- only running it in "test mode"
for the LOG file which was used for identifying files physically not
on either drive, I then manually sorted out.

First time, though, that that situation has arisen, and looking over
those false positives there did not appear any reason to explain
offhand why or what might have triggered SyncBack's having tagged them
for an overwrite.

Something perhaps more critical, I suppose, could involved taking an
approach of generating MD5 Checksum HASH tables which might offer
better subsequent means to respond to a comparison events for whatever
happening to SyncBack to cause it raise those red flags.

Picked up a CHM (help) SyncBack file, possibly included in a
download/distribution if once upon a Hong Kong website -- search
string result is log (two over from the CHM index):

Log Settings
By default the log file, produced when a profile is run, is created in
HTML format. By selecting this menu item you can change the log file
format, or choose not to create a log file at all.

Presumably not written as generic to its commercial SyncBackSE
counterpart (both for the free version to disallow logging files).

If you look at the top of the page, you'll see an almost invisible
"Download" link which leads here:

https://www.duplicati.com/download

Scroll down the page and you'll see a button for "Zip file 2.0.5.1".

I downloaded that zip file (17.3mb) to check it out and it doesn't
contain an installer, but looks like it contains a portable version. I
don't know for sure if that's the case, but at least it's not an .msi
installer.

I ran the download through Virustotal (a fresh scan) and it says that
one (Gridinsoft) out of 63 engines reported something
(Adware.Win32.Agent.vl!n):

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/168aa8b6162586a8a16489e4ac2beece5e14e678bb01c4afcf37fbfb708482f6/detection

I'm not going to run this program, because I use SyncBackFree on my
systems. However, it's likely that Gridinsoft came up with a false positive.

When you're setting up a backup "Profile" in SyncBackFree (or if you
right click on an existing profile and select "Modify"), click on the
"Expert" tab if you're in the "Easy" view. Then click on the "Log" tab
and you can disable logging for that profile or (like I do) limit
logging to "Only when errors occur".

I know that this works, because I just checked and I have no log files
for SyncBackFree anywhere on my drives.

*Dsynchronize*
http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/dsynchronize/dsynchronize.html
I use it since 5 years ago. I also translated it in Italian. :)

Another possibility is:
*Toucan*

Last suggestion not submitted before my post:
*Iperus Backup Free*
https://www.iperiusbackup.com/download-software-backup.aspx
but in this case You must "extract" the setup file with Universal
Extractor and delete all but {app} folder, which can me renamed as you
like. Then, start the program running Iperius.exe

I used that for years before I switched to FreeFileSync.
It's tiny, portable, and does the job.
Can't remember why I switched.
Probably decided I'd put so many hours into writing the
FFS_BATCH files it would be a waste to delete them.
