Brian,
Did you notice that the download appears to be non-freeware? It says "Organic
Art Microsoft Edition Free Demo". If I downloaded a 5.1 mb screensaver only to
discover that it was demoware, I'd very disappointed. Or are you promoting this
demoware knowingly?

I know it says demo but there are NO nags and NO limits (I've
installed it on a number of computers). I believe the 'demo' word is
only used in this case to 'show off' the companies abilities. I'm
sorry if the word demo bothers anyone. I didn't intend to give anyone
misleading info. I did not intend to offend. - Brian

No, you didn't offend *me* at least. Guess I jumped to a conclusion with that last
sentence and my apologies. Thanks for the clarification AND the link. Think I'll do the
download and check it out.

Brian,
You were right! I dont' use screensavers, but this one is worth downloading just to
watch. It's about the best screen saver I've ever seen. Thanks again for the link! By the
way, as for the size, well, I can see why it's that large: very complex.
It really makes excellent use out of my graphics card with "hardware acceleration"
enabled.

For those who missed it:
It doesn't really DO anything except look totally cool.
John
It works with windows?
For the Mac PPC.

I can only second this. But after I had bought the "full version" (ie the
version that doesn't do a nice advertisment coop for MS plus Computer
Artworks), I found the free version a bit dull.
OT, as this is the _non_ free version, but good for comparison:
There is a bargain bin edition available in Germany (within the RePlay
series, by GT Interactive; Hamburg), so I had the opportunity to check it
against the free version. The full thing is really awesome, lots of new
objects, textures, and backgrounds; but if you start the "options
randomizer", the results bring my PIII with 1,2 GHz to its limit.
Sometimes the result has to be counted as "seconds by frame rate" :-)
I would say the MS ad Demo is a fully fledged free program. The only
limitation is that it is all concentrated on MS motifs and has less
setting options. But it _must_ be the same engine, and everything else is
there.

Gabriele,
I didn't see any ads or Microsoft motifs when I ran the screen saver. Maybe I didn't let
it run long enough (I ran it for about 15 minutes)? Here's a screen shot:
http://www.ccountry.net/~jcorliss/ss.jpg
The spiral in the center flips and rolls. Reflects light. This screen shot is heavily
compressed and reduced in size.
Sounds great! I tried downloading a few times, but it always asked for a
password when I tried to install..??? Did you use:
http://ftp.cac.psu.edu/access/win95/Microsoft/OrganicArt/oams04dx.exe
I tried the other demo, which had a few very nice ones as well...

One of the scenes it does has Microsoft desktop icons swirling around.

You're welcome! - Brian (1 week running 24/7 - still no known limits!)
Thanks Brian.
There are also some neat screensavers at
http://reallyslick.demonews.com/index.html
I like Skyrocket 2.0 (3.6 mb), nice fireworks with realistic visual /
sound effects
and keyboard commands. But read the installation instruction as it makes
use
of OpenGL. I also like the tiny Plasma (29 kb) and Euphoria (150 kb).
All
freewares there.
TOUECCANS - "The Obviously Unbelievable Eye Candy Collection" lists a
great collection of screensavers but, unfortunately, they don't identify
freewares from sharewares...

I'm running W98SE. When I click oams04dx.exe it says: Setup - This will
install Organic Art, Microsoft Edition. Do you wish to continu?
When I click Yes (No quits), it says: Setup - Please enter the password
required to extract the attached files:
When I enter something (or nothing) it says: Setup - You have entered an
incorrect password. (and it lets me click OK.)
Maybe someone can mail to me a working version, just to try it out?

Peter,
http://ftp.cac.psu.edu/access/win95/Microsoft/OrganicArt/oams04dx.exe
was the download link I used all right. I think you have to do an anonymous
logon using your email address as a password, but I've received no spam from
them so far. Also, to access the home page properly I had to enable
javascript and turn off all my proxies. The page loads kinda slowly, but
it's worth the wait.
I'm wondering what this "Organic Art Gorbachev Screensaver" is about.

Yeah, I saw that (a pointing finger hand and some other small icon of some sort), but what it
does with those small graphics is amazing. It doesn't seem (that I've noticed at this point ) to
ever plug Microsoft or mention it by name. In fact, I saw no text at all.

mMm,
WOW! Many thanks for these links.
Egad, I'm not going to get any work done now. I'll be spending all my time
staring (hypnotized) at these great screen savers. Everybody else please
note that there are about 12 excellent screensavers total at the reallyslick
screensavers site. The guy who wrote them is looking for work. Seems to me
that he deserves a job.
People occasionally ask why programmers make freeware, well here is an
example of an excellent reason why. I don't think Terry Welsh is going to
have a problem finding employment. In fact, I think he will be able to
practically name his conditions.

Thanks, Janice, for your comment. In fact, there are several of these
Microsoft related effects. I know of two settings which don't show
"Microsoftese" motifs, one being the drifting light blue drops. Play
around with the settings, and you will find out.
How does it differ from the other downloads on that page?

Nope, nothing worse than a "Start" button. Anybody who's bothered by
such a small reminder of MS for some reason could always configure the
screensaver settings to leave that scene out of the playlist.

Your welcome, John.
You can also go to <<<EYECANDIE SESSION>>>

and grab 1 more case of tiny goodies (10 kb to 676kb).
I believe all of them are freeware... I download them all, but only try
AcidWarp, Geiss and PinWell (look at your arm after eying at this one
for a while!), right now. All 3 are great eye candies in my book.

Some more 3D screensavers for who has a compatible system :

2 engines with lots of modules (you can even create them)

I especially like the dancing skeleton in the cloister background.
N.B. Promoware, you will sometimes see their logo.

Mhmh, Geiss is great, but demands a good machine, at least a PII. It is
quite similar to the graphical effects of MS's Media Player. Wondering
whether they are using the same algorithms...
Problem is: I rarely listen to music from my cd drive or any mp3.
Hi all,

Is this freeware? I didn't see any mention of it being freeware on the
site, but there is a " Purchase ($14.95)" link.

Yeah, those are way cool. A warning, though. Turning the settings
way up in the reallyslick Lattice saver caused several problems with
my WinXP machine. I'm pretty sure it was moving the 'field of view'
slider up above 90 degrees that did it. XP wanted to increase the
swapfile size (I don't let it do that), and the system slowed to an
absolute crawl. It took about a half an hour to get the settings
dialog back up to restore defaults. This is a Pentium 4 running at
2133 MHz, so I was pretty surprized.
In any case, once that setting was turned back down, it's all good.
Amazing stuff.

That Silex skeleton is one of my favorites - I use it every year as
31 Oct approaches. Using the headcam makes me dizzy.
For Win9x, the Oceanview saver is a nice 3D one. Various 3D fishies
swim about. Iirc, the Lightcube logo appears in the lower right
corner of the screen to promote their engine.
Thanks much to all who've posted links in this thread! Lots o' nifty
stuff.

Know this is kinda late but this was a project Microsoft commisioned of
William Latham to celebrate the first year anniversary of Windows95's release.
Registered users of Win95 were sent an email inviting them to download this
free screensaver as part of Win95 "1st birthday celebration",
Seems to have problems with DirectX versions> than 5.0
I must have given away thirty copies of it :) >
Later I bought the full version which allows one
to take elements and build one's own animated images. (used to take a lot
of crunching but now with a 1700XP and a GeForce 2 Ti it really rocks :)
There was a slightly better version include with Windows98 Minus! err I mean Plus!
Check out William's site for what he's working on now........

Runs fine for me on a Win 98 machine with DirectX 7.0a.
FWIW.
